Buying a Gaming Laptop: The Numbers That Are Not on the Box

Two laptops with identical GPUs can differ by thirty percent. Here is what causes that and how to find the figure before you buy.

The single most misleading thing about gaming laptop shopping is that the graphics chip name tells you almost nothing about performance.

Two laptops on the same shelf, same chip, same price bracket, can be thirty percent apart. The reason is power: manufacturers decide how many watts the graphics chip is allowed to draw, and that decision is often not printed anywhere the buyer will see it.

Find the TGP before you buy

Total graphics power is the watt figure the GPU is allowed. It varies enormously for the same chip. If a listing does not state it, look for an independent review of that exact model, because the difference between the low and high configurations is larger than a whole tier of graphics chip.

The last row is the one to avoid. A high power limit in a chassis that cannot dissipate the heat gives you strong benchmark numbers and poor sustained performance, which is the reverse of what you want.

What to check, in order

1. Total graphics power. The most important number and the hardest to find. Independent reviews of the specific model usually state it.

2. Sustained performance in reviews. Look for a test that runs longer than a benchmark loop. A laptop that holds its clocks for an hour is a different product from one that drops after eight minutes.

3. Screen brightness and panel type. You cannot replace it. A dim panel is a permanent annoyance.

4. Keyboard and trackpad. Also permanent. Type on one if you possibly can.

5. Storage expandability. Check for a second M.2 slot. Manufacturer storage upgrades are priced several times above retail.

6. RAM configuration. Two sticks rather than one, because single-channel memory costs real performance in games. Some budget models ship single-channel to hit a price.

7. Fan noise under load. Reviewed in decibels by some outlets. A laptop you have to wear headphones to tolerate is a constraint.

Note the last row honestly: a desktop needs a monitor, keyboard and mouse, which narrows the gap. But it does not close it.

The decision comes down to one question: will this machine move? If the answer is no, buy a desktop. If it is yes, the premium is a legitimate cost of portability rather than a mistake.

        A great deal, because unlike a desktop you cannot replace it. A high refresh rate panel is standard now, but brightness and colour vary widely and a dim panel is genuinely unpleasant to use near a window. This is one of the specifications worth paying for since it is permanent.
