Buying a Graphics Card Without Being Misled by the Spec Sheet

Core counts and clock speeds do not compare across brands or generations. Here is what does, and what to check before ordering.

The short answer

Graphics card specifications such as core count and clock speed cannot be compared meaningfully across different architectures or manufacturers, so benchmark results at your specific resolution are the only reliable predictor of performance. VRAM capacity, physical dimensions, power connector type and power supply requirements are the practical specifications that determine whether a card fits and functions in a given system. Checking those four prevents most purchase mistakes.

Graphics card spec sheets are designed to be compared and are almost entirely useless for comparing. That is not an accident.

Core counts, clock speeds and memory bandwidth all vary in meaning across architectures. The one number that predicts performance is a benchmark, and the ones that predict whether the thing works in your machine are physical.

Core counts do not compare across brands or generations

A core from one manufacturer does a different amount of work per clock than one from another. Within a generation and brand the comparison is rough; across them it is meaningless.

Buying at the tight column means compromising on textures within the card's useful life, which is a real cost that does not appear in the purchase price. The VRAM guide covers what shortage actually looks like, since it is hitching and late textures rather than low frame rates.

The physical checks people skip

  1. Card length against your case's stated GPU clearance. Include the power connector, which adds a few centimetres if it is on the end rather than the top.
  2. Slot thickness. Three-slot coolers are common and they block the PCIe slot below.
  3. Connector type. Confirm your power supply has the required native cable, not just an adapter.
  4. Clearance to front fans or a radiator, which is what actually limits length in many cases.

Two minutes on these prevents the most annoying possible outcome, which is a card you cannot install.

Reading reviews properly

Look at benchmarks at the resolution you play at. Relative gaps between cards shift substantially with resolution, and review headline figures usually favour the resolution where the new product looks best.

Look at 1% lows, not just averages. A card with a good average and poor 1% lows feels worse than its headline number.

Look at noise and temperature under sustained load, not a five-minute test. Different partner models of the same chip vary considerably here, and it is the difference you live with daily.

        Can I compare core counts between brands?

        No, and this is the most common spec-sheet mistake. A compute unit from one manufacturer and a core from another perform different amounts of work per clock, and the same is true across generations from a single manufacturer. Core counts are only comparable within a single generation of a single brand, and even then imperfectly. Benchmarks at your resolution are the only trustworthy comparison.

        How much VRAM do I need in 2026?

        At 1080p, twelve gigabytes is comfortable and eight is workable with texture compromises. At 1440p, sixteen is comfortable and twelve is the practical floor. At 4K, sixteen or more. Add roughly two gigabytes to each figure if you intend to use ray tracing. These numbers have climbed steadily and buying at the floor means compromising sooner than you expect.

        What is the most commonly missed check?

        Physical length against case clearance, closely followed by power connector type. A card that is twenty millimetres too long is an immediate return, and a card requiring a connector your power supply lacks means either an adapter of dubious quality or a new power supply. Both are checkable in two minutes before ordering and both catch people out regularly.

        Are the manufacturer's recommended power supply figures accurate?

        They are conservative and account for poor-quality units, so a good power supply somewhat below the recommendation often works. That said, transient power spikes on modern cards are brief and large, and a marginal unit can trigger a protective shutdown under load even when its average headroom looks fine. Following the recommendation is the sensible default unless you know your unit is a strong one.
