How to Fix Controller Stick Drift — PS5, Xbox and Joy-Con

Compressed air and cotton buds buy you two weeks. Here's the difference between cleaning drift, calibrating around it, and actually fixing it — including the Hall effect replacement route.

The short answer

Stick drift is caused by wear in the potentiometer inside the analogue stick, not by dust, so cleaning only helps temporarily. The fixes in order of durability are: recalibrate and increase the deadzone (free, immediate, hides mild drift), clean the potentiometer with isopropyl alcohol through the gap (works for weeks to months), or replace the stick module with a Hall effect unit (permanent, requires soldering or a drop-in kit). Joy-Con drift is covered by a free Nintendo repair in most regions regardless of warranty status.

I have three controllers on my desk with some degree of drift, and the reason I have three is that for about a year I kept doing the thing everyone does — blasting compressed air into the stick, getting two good weeks, and repeating.

That approach is not wrong exactly. It is just aimed at the wrong problem.

What drift actually is

Under each analogue stick sits a potentiometer: a resistive track with a small wiper arm sweeping across it as you move the stick. The controller reads the resistance and converts it to a position. After a few million movements the wiper wears a groove into the track, and the worn section returns a value the controller interprets as "the stick is being pushed". No amount of cleaning replaces material that is gone.

Step 1: Confirm it is actually drift

Worth thirty seconds, because two other faults look identical from the sofa.

Open a stick tester — the built-in one on PS5 (Settings → Accessories → Controller → Test Input), Xbox Accessories app, or any browser gamepad tester on PC. Let go of the sticks entirely and watch the readout.

  • Value sits away from centre, steadily: classic drift.
  • Value jitters around centre but averages zero: normal noise, not drift. Your problem is elsewhere.
  • Value is centred but the game still moves: a game-side deadzone setting or a second connected controller. Check for a phone paired over Bluetooth — this happens constantly.

Note how far off centre it sits. That number decides whether step 2 is enough.

Step 2: Recalibrate and widen the deadzone

Free, instant, and enough for mild drift.

On PC, Steam's controller configuration lets you set a deadzone per controller and it applies across every Steam game. On PS5 there is no system-wide deadzone control, so this has to be done per game where offered. Xbox's Accessories app allows a custom curve on Elite controllers and basic calibration on standard ones.

Set the deadzone just above the drift value you measured. If the stick rests at 8% off centre, a 12% deadzone makes it invisible.

This does cost you fine control, and in a precision shooter you will feel it. Treat it as a bridge to a real fix rather than the destination.

Step 3: Clean the potentiometer properly

This is worth doing well because done properly it buys months, not weeks — and done the usual way it buys almost nothing.

Get the right fluid Prep

99% isopropyl alcohol. Not contact cleaner with lubricant in it, which leaves a residue that attracts dust. Not the 70% variety from a pharmacy, which is 30% water and takes far too long to evaporate near electronics.

Find the gap 2 min

Pull the rubber stick cap off. At the base of the stick, where the shaft enters the housing, there is a small gap on each of the two axes. That gap leads directly to the potentiometer. This is where the fluid needs to go — not the surface, not the cap.

Apply a few drops and work it in 5 min

Three or four drops into each gap with the controller powered off. Then move the stick through its full range in circles, thirty or forty rotations, plus a few dozen full presses into each corner. You are scrubbing the wiper across the track with solvent between them.

Let it dry completely 30 min

Half an hour minimum before powering on. Isopropyl evaporates fast but the inside of a stick housing is not well ventilated. Powering up while it is wet risks a short.

On the launch DualSense this took a stick that rested at 14% off centre down to under 2%. It came back after about four months, which is roughly what to expect: the groove is still there, you have just cleared what was sitting in it.

Step 4: Replace the module — the only permanent fix

Everything above manages the symptom. This removes the cause.

Hall effect stick modules use a magnet and a sensor with no physical contact, so there is no track to wear. Drop-in replacement kits exist for DualSense, Xbox and Joy-Con, and they have got substantially easier to fit over the past two years.

The DualSense is the awkward one. Sony soldered the sticks directly to the board and there is no way around it. If you have never soldered, this is not the project to learn on — a repair shop will typically charge less than a new controller.

Before you buy anything for a Joy-Con: Nintendo repairs drift free of charge in most regions, warranty or not. It has been their policy since 2019. Check your regional support site first.

        Why does compressed air only work for a couple of weeks?

        Because dust is rarely the actual cause. Inside a standard analogue stick is a potentiometer — a small resistive track with a wiper arm dragging across it. Millions of movements wear a groove in that track, and the worn section reports a voltage the controller reads as movement. Air can dislodge debris sitting on the track, which helps briefly, but it cannot restore material that has been physically worn away.

        Is Hall effect actually better or is it marketing?

        It is genuinely different technology. Hall effect sticks measure the position of a magnet with a sensor and nothing physically touches anything, so there is no wear surface to degrade. They do not develop drift the way potentiometer sticks do. The tradeoffs are real but minor: slightly higher power draw, and a small number of users find the response curve subtly different. For a controller you use daily, it is worth it.

        Will Nintendo still fix Joy-Con drift for free?

        In most regions, yes, and this has been the case since 2019 following regulatory pressure in several countries. Nintendo repairs drifting Joy-Cons at no charge whether or not the warranty has expired, though the exact process varies by territory and you will be without them for a couple of weeks. Check your regional Nintendo support site before spending money on a replacement — a lot of people buy new Joy-Cons unnecessarily.

        Does increasing the deadzone hurt my aim?

        Slightly, and it is a real tradeoff rather than a free fix. A larger deadzone means small stick inputs are ignored, which reduces fine control — noticeable in a precision shooter, almost invisible in a racing or action game. If you are competitive, treat deadzone as a stopgap while you arrange a proper repair, not the solution.

        My controller disconnects randomly. Is that related to drift?

        No, that is a separate fault and usually not the stick. Random disconnects are typically a failing battery that browns out under load, Bluetooth interference from a 2.4 GHz device or a USB 3.0 port near the receiver, or a worn charging port on a wired connection. Test wired first: if a cable makes it stable, the radio or battery is the problem, not the controller's internals.
