How to Buy a Gaming Monitor Without Overpaying for Numbers You Can't See
144Hz vs 240Hz, 1080p vs 1440p, curved or flat, response time claims that aren't real. Here's what changes your experience and what's a spec sheet decoration.

For most players a 1440p 144-165Hz IPS monitor is the correct purchase — it is the point where resolution and refresh both cross the threshold of clear benefit without either becoming expensive. Going above 165Hz only pays off in competitive shooters where you can sustain the frame rate, and 4K gaming requires a GPU tier most people do not own. Ignore quoted 1ms response times; they are measured under conditions that do not apply in normal use.

Monitor spec sheets are unusually dishonest, and not always by lying. They quote real numbers measured under conditions that do not resemble how anyone uses a monitor, and they lead with whichever number is highest rather than whichever matters.
So here is the same information ordered by what actually changes your experience.
The short version
If you want one recommendation without reading further: 27-inch, 1440p, 144–165Hz, IPS panel, DisplayPort 1.4, with FreeSync or G-Sync Compatible certification. That configuration is where the price-to-benefit curve peaks and it suits nearly everyone. Everything below is why.
Refresh rate: real, with diminishing returns
Refresh rate is the number of times per second the panel can update. It is the spec that most changes how a game feels, and also the one where the marketing exploits people the hardest.
The gains are not linear, because what actually matters is the time between frames:
The step from 60 to 144 removes almost 10 milliseconds between frames. Every step after that is fighting over one or two. This is why 165Hz is marketed as an upgrade over 144Hz and is functionally the same monitor.
The other half of this: you have to be able to produce the frames. A 240Hz monitor fed 90 FPS is a 90Hz monitor with a better idle animation. Match the panel to what your hardware actually delivers in the games you play.
Resolution: pixel density is the real number
Resolution alone means nothing without screen size. What matters is pixels per inch.
Around 100–110 PPI is where most people stop noticing pixel structure at desk distance. That makes 1440p at 27 inches the practical target, and it explains why 1080p at 27 inches disappoints people who expected a bigger screen to be a better one.
4K is genuinely beautiful and genuinely expensive to drive. Running 4K at high refresh in modern titles needs a top-tier GPU, and upscaling technologies help but do not eliminate the cost.
Panel type: IPS, unless you have a specific reason
Three technologies, and the choice is easier than it looks.
- IPS — best colour, best viewing angles, good response times now. Weaker contrast, and backlight bleed is a common panel-lottery issue. This is the default correct answer.
- VA — much better contrast, so blacks look genuinely black. Slower pixel response causes dark smearing in fast motion, which is more distracting than the contrast is pleasing for most people. Good for single-player and cinematic games.
- TN — fastest and cheapest, with poor colour and narrow viewing angles. Largely obsolete now that IPS panels are fast enough; only worth it at the extreme competitive end.
- OLED — perfect blacks, essentially instant response, and genuinely a different experience. Expensive, with burn-in risk that is much reduced but not eliminated. If you leave static HUDs on screen for thousands of hours, factor that in.
Response time: mostly fiction
Every monitor claims 1ms. Almost none deliver it in normal use.
The quoted figure is grey-to-grey, measured at the fastest possible transition, with overdrive pushed to a level that produces visible overshoot artefacts. It is a best case selected specifically to produce a marketing number.
What matters instead is the panel's real-world average across all transitions, which you will only find in independent review measurements. A well-tuned IPS at a claimed 4ms frequently outperforms a badly tuned panel claiming 1ms.
Practical advice: ignore the number on the box, and if you care, look up a measured review of the specific model.

FreeSync and G-Sync Compatible let the monitor match its refresh rate to your frame rate, eliminating tearing without the input lag of V-Sync.
This is standard on essentially every gaming monitor now and adds no meaningful cost. Just make sure it is actually turned on — it frequently is not by default, in both the monitor's OSD and your graphics driver settings.

At 32 inches and above, or on ultrawides, yes — the curve keeps the screen edges at a consistent distance from your eyes, which genuinely reduces the sense of looking away to see the corners. What monitor should I get for a PS5?
A 1440p 120Hz panel with HDMI 2.1 hits the sweet spot, since the PS5 supports 1440p output and 120Hz modes in a growing number of games. Do not buy a 4K 60Hz panel for a PS5 in 2026 — the console's performance modes target higher frame rates at lower resolutions, and you would be paying for resolution the games often will not use while giving up the refresh rate they will.
