Game sizes have outgrown 1 TB. Here's the real capacity maths, whether Gen 5 helps, and when a hard drive is still fine.

For gaming in 2026 the practical minimum is 1 TB of SSD storage and 2 TB is the comfortable figure, because current AAA installations routinely exceed 100 GB each. Drive speed beyond a mid-range Gen 4 NVMe makes almost no difference to game loading, since most loading time is CPU decompression rather than raw sequential read. A hard drive remains acceptable for storing games you are not currently playing.

Storage is the easiest gaming purchase to get wrong, because the specification that is marketed hardest — sequential read speed — is the one that matters least.

The jump from a hard drive to any SSD is transformative. The jump from a Gen 3 NVMe to a Gen 5 is fractions of a second, because most load time is CPU decompression, not drive reads. Spend the money on terabytes, not gigabytes per second.

The last row is the one most people should consider. A fast SSD for what you are playing now, a cheap mechanical drive as a library you move things from. It costs far less than an equivalent all-SSD setup and the only cost is a few minutes of moving files.
