Retro Handhelds: Which Tier You Actually Need
The chip tiers, what each can emulate, and why buying the most powerful one is usually a mistake for a retro library.

Retro handhelds are cheap, plentiful and confusingly tiered. The buying mistake almost everyone makes is going one or two tiers higher than their library needs, on the assumption that more is safer.
More is more expensive, heavier, and shorter on battery, for capability you will not use.
Buy for the systems you actually play
Write down the consoles you want to emulate. The correct device is the cheapest one that handles all of them well. Everything above that is spent capability.
The tiers
Most people's retro nostalgia sits in the first two tiers. The high tier exists for people who specifically want a particular sixth-generation console library, and it costs several times as much.
What matters more than the chip
Screen. You look at it constantly. Brightness and colour matter more than resolution. Crucially, aspect ratio: a 4:3 screen suits older systems properly, while a widescreen panel letterboxes almost everything you will play.
Controls. Buttons and d-pad feel varies enormously at these prices and is the most common source of regret. A poor d-pad ruins exactly the games you bought the device for.
Battery. Lower tiers frequently run for many hours; high tiers considerably less. If the appeal is casual portable play, this is a real factor.
Size and pocketability. A device that fits in a pocket gets used. One that needs a bag competes with your phone and loses.
Operating system and firmware. Purpose-built retro interfaces boot straight to a library. Android-based devices are more flexible and more fiddly. Community firmware often improves either substantially, and checking whether a device has active community support before buying is worthwhile.
The legal position
Emulators are legal software. The game files are the question.
The defensible position is dumping games you own physically, which requires additional hardware and a certain amount of effort. Everything else varies by jurisdiction and is generally not defensible.
Worth knowing: devices sold preloaded with hundreds of games are distributing software the seller has no right to distribute. That is a signal about the seller as much as about the legality.

Setting one up
The usual sequence:
- Update the firmware, or install community firmware if that is the plan
- Format the memory card to the required format, which the device documentation specifies
- Add system files where required, which some emulated systems need to run
- Organise the library into per-system folders matching the expected structure
- Scrape artwork and metadata, which makes browsing far more pleasant
- Configure per-system settings, particularly aspect ratio and scaling
Steps four and five are where an afternoon goes, and they are what makes the difference between a device you browse happily and one you find frustrating.
Scaling and filters
Old games at their native resolution on a modern screen look either tiny or stretched, so scaling matters.
Integer scaling keeps pixels sharp and even, at the cost of black borders. Fitting to the screen fills it but produces uneven pixels. Shader filters can simulate the look of an old display, which some people love and others find blurry.
There is no correct answer, but the default is rarely the best one, and it is worth spending ten minutes on this once rather than living with it.
