Gaming Keyboards — What Actually Matters and What Doesn't

Switch types explained without the mysticism, plus the two features that genuinely affect competitive play and the several that don't.

The short answer

For gaming, linear switches are the usual recommendation because they have no tactile bump to travel past, though the difference from tactile switches is smaller than marketing suggests. The two features that genuinely affect competitive play are polling rate consistency and adjustable actuation on analogue switches; RGB lighting, macro keys and switch brand have no measurable effect on performance.

Keyboard marketing is unusually full of nonsense — switch mysticism, latency claims measured in fractions of a millisecond, RGB described as if it affects performance.

Two things genuinely matter for gaming. Here they are, and here is everything that does not.

What actually matters

Consistent actuation and, if you play competitive shooters, adjustable actuation with rapid trigger. That is the list. Switch brand, RGB, macro keys and 8000 Hz polling do not change outcomes.

Switch types, without the mysticism

Practical differences rather than enthusiast distinctions

Linear is recommended for gaming because there is no bump to travel past. In practice the difference is small and plenty of strong players use tactile switches. If you type as much as you game, tactile is more pleasant and costs you effectively nothing.

Hall effect: the one genuinely new thing

Magnetic switches read key position continuously rather than triggering at a fixed point, which enables two features that do matter:

Adjustable actuation. Set movement keys shallow for fast response and other keys deeper to avoid mistakes. Per-key, on the same board.

Rapid trigger. The key resets the moment you begin lifting it, rather than at a fixed reset point. For counter-strafing in shooters — where you must fully release a movement key before the character stops — this is a measurable advantage, and it is why these boards spread through competitive play quickly.

If you do not play games where counter-strafing matters, this is an expensive feature you will not use.

Size, and why it affects aim

Smaller boards free mouse space, which matters at low sensitivity

The reason competitive players use small boards is not aesthetics. At low sensitivity you make large arm sweeps and a full-size keyboard is physically in the way. Tenkeyless is the sensible compromise for most people.

What to ignore

RGB. It is nice. It does nothing.

Macro keys. Most competitive games prohibit macros anyway, and single-keystroke macros are a rules problem in several.

8000 Hz polling. Consistency at 1000 Hz beats instability at 8000, and the CPU overhead of very high polling is real while the benefit is not perceptible.

Switch brand tribalism. Two linear switches with similar weight and travel feel more similar than the discourse suggests.

        Do mechanical keyboards actually make you better at games?

        Marginally, and mostly through consistency rather than speed. A mechanical switch actuates at a predictable point every time, where a worn membrane keyboard can require variable force and occasionally miss inputs. That consistency matters. The often-quoted latency advantage is real but small enough to be irrelevant next to network latency and your own reaction time.

        Linear or tactile for gaming?

        Linear is the standard recommendation because there is no tactile bump to push through, so the actuation feels immediate. Honestly the difference in play is small and largely preference — plenty of strong players use tactile switches. If you also type a great deal, tactile is more pleasant for that and the gaming penalty is negligible. Do not overthink this one.

        Are Hall effect keyboards worth the money?

        For competitive play specifically, they offer something genuinely new: adjustable actuation depth and rapid trigger, where the key resets the instant you begin lifting rather than at a fixed point. For counter-strafing in shooters that is a measurable advantage and it is why they have become common in competitive circles. For everything else it is an expensive feature you will not use.

        Is a smaller keyboard better for gaming?

        It gives you more desk space for mouse movement, which genuinely matters at low sensitivity where you make large arm sweeps. Beyond that it is preference. A tenkeyless layout is the usual compromise, keeping the function row and arrows while removing the numeric pad. Sixty per cent layouts free the most space but put arrows and function keys behind a modifier, which is a real daily cost.

        Does polling rate matter on a keyboard?

        Consistency matters more than the headline number. A stable 1000 Hz is better than an unstable 8000 Hz, and very high polling rates can increase CPU overhead for no perceptible gain. Any decent keyboard at a consistent 1000 Hz is beyond the point where you could detect a difference, so treat higher figures as marketing.
