Buying a Microphone for Gaming and Streaming

USB versus XLR, condenser versus dynamic, and why the popular choice is wrong for most untreated rooms.

The short answer

A dynamic microphone suits most gaming rooms better than the popular condenser designs, because condensers are sensitive enough to capture keyboards, fans and room reflections that an untreated space is full of. USB is sufficient for almost everyone, with XLR justified only when you need multiple sources or specific processing hardware. A boom arm improves results more than spending more on the microphone itself.

The most-recommended streaming microphones are large condenser models, and they are the wrong choice for most of the rooms they end up in.

A condenser is sensitive and detailed. In a treated studio that is exactly what you want. In a bedroom with a mechanical keyboard, a PC fan two feet away and bare walls, it captures all of that with the same enthusiasm as your voice.

Dynamic for untreated rooms

Dynamic microphones reject more of what is not directly in front of them. In a normal room with normal noise, a dynamic sounds cleaner than a more expensive condenser.

The choice that matters most

The trade with a dynamic is that it wants to be close, within a hand's width. That is a positioning requirement rather than a downside, and close positioning is what you want anyway.

USB versus XLR

USB: plugs in, works, no interface required. Sufficient for one person talking. Modern USB microphones are genuinely good.

XLR: requires an audio interface, adds cost and cables, and provides value when you need several inputs, specific hardware processing, or a microphone only available in that format.

The honest guidance for a single streamer or a person in voice chat: buy USB. The XLR route is a real upgrade path for people who have identified a specific reason, and a needless complication for people who have not.

Where the budget actually goes

In order of impact per unit of money:

  1. A boom arm. Gets the microphone close and off the desk, away from keyboard vibration. The largest single improvement available.
  2. A dynamic microphone, modestly priced.
  3. A pop filter, cheap, or just position slightly off-axis.
  4. Room treatment. Even soft furnishings and a curtain help.
  5. A more expensive microphone. Last, and the difference is smaller than the marketing suggests.

Most people invert this list and buy the expensive microphone first, then discover it sounds worse than expected because it is sitting on a desk stand two feet away in a bare room.

Polar patterns

The pattern determines what the microphone hears from which directions.

  • Cardioid: picks up from the front, rejects the rear. What you want, essentially always.
  • Omnidirectional: picks up everything. Useful for a room of people, terrible for a gaming setup.
  • Bidirectional: front and back. For two people facing each other.
  • Stereo: for music, not voice.

If a microphone offers switchable patterns, set it to cardioid and leave it. The other modes exist for situations you do not have.

Before you buy

Check that your current setup is actually the problem. Record two minutes with what you have, positioned properly, six inches from your mouth with the gain set correctly.

For streaming or recording, a standalone microphone is a clear step up, mostly because it sits closer to a consistent position and does not move with your head.
