Minecraft Crossplay and Playing With Friends

Java and Bedrock cannot play together, and that single fact causes most Minecraft multiplayer confusion.

The short answer

Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition cannot connect to each other's servers, which is the fundamental limitation behind most crossplay confusion. Bedrock Edition supports crossplay across consoles, mobile and Windows, while Java Edition connects only to other Java players regardless of platform. Determining which edition each person owns is the necessary first step, since the purchase does not always make it obvious.

Almost every Minecraft multiplayer problem traces back to one fact that the game does very little to communicate.

Java and Bedrock are different games. They cannot join each other's worlds, and no setting changes that.

Check editions before anything else

Before troubleshooting connections, establish which edition each person owns. Most reported connection failures between friends are simply this.

Who can play with whom

Edition by platform and who each can join

Bedrock crossplay is genuinely good. A console player, a phone player and a Windows player can share a world with no friction at all.

Java crossplay across operating systems is also fine. Windows, Mac and Linux Java players all connect normally.

The wall is strictly between the two editions.

Working out which you own

This is less obvious than it should be:

  1. Bought on a console or mobile store? Bedrock, always.
  2. Bought through the Microsoft Store on Windows? Bedrock.
  3. Bought from minecraft.net and launch Java Edition? Java.
  4. Recent PC purchase? Often includes both, selectable in the launcher.

That last point matters. Many people own both without knowing, and switching editions in the launcher solves a problem they were about to buy a second copy to fix.

Choosing for a group

If anyone in the group is on a console or phone, the decision is made: Bedrock, because it is the only edition they can run.

If everyone is on PC, Java is usually better, principally for the modding ecosystem, which is vastly larger. The Java versus Bedrock comparison covers the gameplay differences that also matter here.

Realms and servers

Realms is a separate subscription per edition. A Java Realm accepts Java players only, and a Bedrock Realm accepts Bedrock players only. Buying the wrong one is a common and irritating mistake.

For self-hosted servers, the same split applies. Bridging software exists for large public servers but it is not something to attempt between four friends who want to play this evening.

The multiplayer and Realms guide covers hosting options in more detail once the edition question is settled.

      Key takeaways

        Frequently asked questions

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?

Not on the same server through normal means, because they use fundamentally different networking. Some server software bridges the two with plugins, and large public servers sometimes offer this, but it is not a feature of the game and cannot be set up casually between friends. For practical purposes, treat them as separate games that share a name.

How do I know which edition I own?

If you bought it through the Microsoft Store, a console store or a mobile app store, it is Bedrock. If you bought it from minecraft.net as the Java version and launch it through the Minecraft Launcher selecting Java Edition, it is Java. Recent purchases often include both for PC, which is worth checking before buying anything again.

        Does Realms work across editions?

Realms exists for both editions but a Java Realm accepts only Java players and a Bedrock Realm only Bedrock players. The subscriptions are separate purchases. This catches out households where one person bought a Realm expecting everyone to join regardless of what they play on.

Which edition should a group choose?

Bedrock if the group spans consoles and mobile, since that is the only way they can play together at all. Java if everyone is on PC and you want mods, since the modding ecosystem is vastly larger. The presence of a single console player usually decides it for the whole group.
