Nintendo Switch Error Codes — Decoding the Numbers
Switch error codes follow a readable pattern. Learn to decode the prefix and you can diagnose most problems in seconds.
The short answer
Nintendo Switch error codes follow a four-digit prefix pattern where 2110 and 2811 indicate network connection problems, 2124 and 2123 indicate account or eShop issues, 2016 and 2002 indicate system or storage errors, and 2168 and 2101 indicate software or corrupted data. Decoding the prefix tells you which subsystem failed, which narrows the fix from a generic reboot to a specific action.

Switch error codes look arbitrary and are not. The first four digits identify the subsystem, and once you can read that, the fix narrows immediately.
The prefix is the diagnosis
2110 / 2811 = network. 2124 / 2123 = account and eShop. 2016 / 2002 = system and storage. 2168 / 2101 = software and corrupted data. The four digits after the dash are the specific case, and they matter far less than the prefix.
Step 1: Decode the prefix
Step 2: Network errors, 2110 and 2811
By far the most common family, and DNS is the usual culprit.
Set manual DNS 3 min
System Settings → Internet → your network → Change Settings → DNS Settings → Manual. Primary 1.1.1.1, secondary 1.0.0.1. Save and test the connection. This alone resolves the majority of 2110 errors and it is the first thing to try.
Move to the 5 GHz band or get closer to the router 5 min
The Switch has a notoriously weak Wi-Fi aerial, particularly in docked mode where the dock body blocks it. Signal problems that no other device in the house experiences are normal for this console.
Restart the router properly 5 min
Unplug for thirty seconds, not a quick power cycle. Router state genuinely goes stale and this is not superstition.
Test on a phone hotspot 5 min
This separates console from network in one step. If the hotspot works, the problem is your router or ISP, and nothing you do on the console will fix it.
Step 3: Account and eShop errors
The 2124 and 2123 families are account state, not console faults.
- Sign out and back in on the affected user. Resolves a good share of them.
- Check the account region matches the eShop you are trying to access. Region mismatch is the single most common 2124 cause.
- Verify payment details are current. Expired cards produce eShop errors that read like technical faults.
- Check the Nintendo network status page before troubleshooting anything. Service outages produce codes that look local.
Step 4: Software crashes and corrupted data
"The software was closed because an error occurred" is the 2168 family.
Run the built-in data check 10 min
System Settings → Data Management → Software → select the game → Check for Corrupt Data. If corruption is found, the console redownloads the affected portion. This is the correct fix and it is non-destructive.
Update the game and the system 10 min
Version mismatches between game and firmware cause crashes that present as corruption.
Suspect the microSD card if it recurs 15 min
Repeated corruption across different games points at the card. Counterfeit and low-quality cards are common and often work fine before failing under sustained use. Move one affected game to internal storage and see whether it stays stable.
Do not factory reset for an error code
It is massively over-recommended and it destroys local save data for any game without cloud save support. Work through the specific fix for the code family first. Reset is a genuine last resort.

Frequently asked questions
What does error 2110-3127 mean?
It is a general connection failure between the console and Nintendo's servers, and despite the specific-looking number it is one of the least specific codes on the system. It usually means DNS resolution failed or the router is blocking or mishandling the connection. Setting manual DNS to a public resolver fixes it in the large majority of cases, and it is worth trying before anything more involved.
Why does my Switch say the software was closed because an error occurred?
That is typically the 2168 family and it indicates corrupted software data rather than a hardware fault. The fix is the built-in data check: System Settings, Data Management, Software, select the game, Check for Corrupt Data. If corruption is found the console redownloads the affected portion. If it recurs on the same game repeatedly, the microSD card is the likely culprit.
Is a 2124 error my fault or Nintendo's?
Usually neither in the sense people mean — the 2124 family relates to account state, most often a region mismatch between the account and the eShop being accessed, or an account that needs to re-authenticate. Signing out and back in resolves a good proportion. If it persists across accounts on the same console, the console's own registration may need attention.
Should I do a factory reset to fix an error code?
Almost never, and it is dramatically over-recommended. Factory reset destroys local save data that is not backed up to cloud saves, which includes any game that does not support cloud saves at all. Work through the specific fix for the code family first. Reset is a last resort after data checks, network reconfiguration and account re-authentication have all failed.
Do error codes mean my microSD card is failing?
Repeated corruption errors on games installed to the card are a strong signal, particularly if different games are affected. Counterfeit and low-quality cards are a common cause and they often work fine initially before failing under sustained use. If corruption recurs after a data check, test by moving one affected game to internal storage and seeing whether it remains stable.
