Setting Up Parental Controls That Actually Work
Where to set spending, chat and time limits across consoles, PC and Roblox, and which controls children route around within a week.
The short answer
Effective parental controls for gaming need to be set in three places: the platform account, the device, and the individual game. Spending limits and chat restrictions are the two that matter most, because unexpected charges and unmoderated contact are the two problems that actually cause harm. Time limits are the most commonly circumvented control and work better as an agreement than a technical restriction.

Most parental control setups I have seen fail in the same way. Someone spends an evening configuring time limits, feels the job is done, and then a card gets charged forty pounds for in-game currency because the store was never locked.
The controls are worth setting. The order matters more than the completeness.
Spending is the one that bites
Chat problems are visible and manageable. An unexpected charge arrives after the fact, often repeatedly, and platform refunds for in-game purchases made by a child are inconsistent at best. Do this one first.
Where the three layers sit
Almost every gap I have seen comes from assuming the platform layer covers the game layer. It does not. A console with strict account settings will still allow open text chat inside a game that runs its own chat system.
Step 1: Lock down spending first
The most reliable control is the absence of a stored payment method. Remove the card from the account rather than relying on a purchase PIN, because PINs get observed.
Where a card must stay on the account:
- Set a monthly spending limit at the platform level, as low as is practical
- Require a password or PIN for every purchase, not just for the first one in a session
- Turn off one-click or saved-checkout options in the store
- Check for existing subscriptions that renew automatically
Gift cards are the better model for a child with pocket money. The limit is inherent, and there is nothing to overspend.
Step 2: Set chat and contact restrictions
Every platform has contact settings covering who can send messages, who can invite to parties, and whether voice chat is available. The sensible defaults for a younger child are friends only for messages and voice, and off for anyone else.
Then check the specific games. This is the step that gets skipped:
- Roblox has its own privacy settings covering chat, direct messages and who can join you
- Minecraft multiplayer servers each run their own chat, unaffected by console settings
- Most live-service games have separate text and voice toggles in their own options
Step 3: Set age ratings for content
Apply an age filter on the platform account so that titles above the rating cannot be downloaded or launched. This is straightforward and works reliably.
The one caveat: age ratings describe content, not social risk. A game rated for all ages with open chat is often the higher-risk environment compared with a single-player game rated higher for violence.
Step 4: Add time limits as a backstop
Time limits are the control everyone reaches for first and the one that works least well on its own.
They fail because children have other devices, because second accounts are trivial to create, and because a limit that arrives with no warning mid-match creates exactly the resentment that motivates working around it.
What works better:
- Agree the amount of time in advance, in a conversation
- Set the technical limit to match the agreement rather than to impose it
- Enable the warning notifications so play can be wound down rather than cut
- Accept that weekends and holidays need different numbers
Step 5: Check the game-level settings
Go through the child's actual most-played games and open their settings. Look for chat, voice, trading, friend requests and server browsing. Set each explicitly rather than trusting a default.
For Roblox specifically, the account's date of birth determines the default restrictions. An account created with an adult birth date gets adult defaults regardless of how the platform account is configured, and this is one of the most common gaps.

Frequently asked questions
Which parental control matters most?
Spending. An unmoderated chat conversation is a risk that good supervision can manage, but a stored card with no spending limit is a problem that resolves itself into a four-figure statement with no warning. Remove the stored payment method entirely if the child has independent access to the device.
Do children get around time limits?
Frequently, and quickly. Common routes include a second account, playing on a phone or a friend's device, or simply knowing the PIN because they watched it being typed. Time limits work when they support an agreement everyone accepts and fail when they are the whole enforcement mechanism.
Can I turn off chat in Roblox completely?
Yes, through the account privacy settings, and for accounts under 13 several chat features are restricted by default. The important caveat is that the account age setting is what drives this, and an account created with an incorrect date of birth will have adult defaults. Check the birth date on the account, not just the settings.
Should I read my child's messages?
Covert monitoring tends to end badly when discovered, and it usually is. Being open about what you can see and why builds a situation where a child tells you when something goes wrong, which is the outcome that actually protects them. The controls are more useful for limiting who can make contact in the first place.
