Airflow is about pressure and path, not fan count. A restrictive front panel undoes six fans instantly.

The short answer

Case airflow is determined primarily by intake restriction and the path air takes through the case, rather than by the number of fans installed. A restrictive front panel limits intake regardless of how many fans push against it, making panel design the dominant factor in cooling performance. Slight positive pressure, with intake exceeding exhaust, reduces dust accumulation by forcing air through filtered intakes rather than unfiltered gaps.

The front panel decides it

Intake fans can only move air that can get into the case. A solid or heavily restricted front panel starves them regardless of speed, and no configuration compensates.

The configuration that works

Front intake, rear and top exhaust. Air enters cool at the front, passes over the components, and leaves warm at the back and top.

That is it. Two front intake fans and one rear exhaust is a proven baseline that suits the majority of builds.

Additions worth considering:

A top exhaust if you have a radiator or a hot processor. Heat rises and helping it leave is sensible.

A bottom intake if the case supports it and your graphics card sits above it.

Nothing else. Beyond four fans you are adding noise faster than you are removing heat.

Pressure, and why it is about dust

Positive pressure means intake exceeds exhaust, so air leaves through every gap in the case.

Negative pressure means the reverse, and air is pulled in through every unfiltered gap, seam and cable cutout.

Thermally these are close. For dust they are not: positive pressure forces air through your filtered intakes, and the difference in dust accumulation over six months is substantial.

Run slightly positive. One more intake than exhaust is sufficient.

Where builds go wrong

Cables blocking the intake path. Particularly behind a drive cage. Routing them behind the motherboard tray costs nothing and helps.

Fans fighting each other. A side fan blowing across the intake path disrupts it. More airflow in the wrong direction is worse than none.

Filters never cleaned. A clogged filter turns a good case into a restrictive one. Clean them every few months.

The graphics card recirculating its own exhaust. In cases with poor bottom clearance, the card pulls in air it just heated. Raising the case or improving bottom intake helps.

Fan curves

Default motherboard fan curves are usually conservative and noisy in the wrong places, ramping aggressively for brief temperature spikes.

Setting a gradual curve with a delay produces a quieter system at the same temperatures, because it ignores momentary spikes that would otherwise cause the fans to surge.
