Which PC Part to Upgrade First

Diagnosing your actual bottleneck before spending, and why the part you want to upgrade is usually not the one holding you back.

The short answer

The component to upgrade is determined by which one is at full utilisation while the other is not, which is visible in any monitoring overlay during actual gameplay. A graphics card at full utilisation with the processor below it means the GPU is the limit; the reverse indicates a processor or memory constraint. Upgrading the component that is not the bottleneck produces little or no improvement regardless of how much better it is.

The part you want to upgrade and the part holding you back are usually different, and the gap between them is where upgrade money gets wasted.

Working out which is which takes one gaming session and a monitoring overlay.

Utilisation identifies the bottleneck

The component sitting at full utilisation while the other has headroom is the limit. Upgrade that one. Upgrading the other produces almost nothing.

Step 1: Measure utilisation during real gameplay

Run an overlay and play normally 20 minutes

Set up a monitoring overlay showing CPU utilisation, GPU utilisation, frame rate and memory use. Play the games you actually play, in the situations where performance disappoints, not a benchmark. Note the readings during the bad moments specifically.

Reading utilisation figures

The CPU row is worth explaining. Games are often limited by one thread, so total processor utilisation can look modest while a single core is saturated. Look at per-core figures, not just the total.

Step 2: Check memory and VRAM separately

Both produce stutter rather than low frame rates, which is why they get misdiagnosed as a graphics card problem.

System memory shortage: stuttering, long loading, disk activity during gameplay, worse with a browser open. The fix is more memory, and it is inexpensive.

VRAM shortage: hitching when moving through an area, textures loading in late, worse at higher texture settings. The fix is lower texture settings or a card with more memory. The VRAM guide covers how to tell allocated from required.

Neither shows up as a low frame rate in steady gameplay, which is the distinguishing feature.

Step 3: Consider the cheap upgrades first

Per unit of money, in typical order:

  1. An SSD if you are still on a mechanical drive. Transformative for loading and streaming hitches, cheap, and often overlooked in old systems.
  2. More memory if you are at 8GB. Inexpensive and removes a hard constraint.
  3. Cooling and case airflow if you are throttling. Free to diagnose, cheap to fix, and a throttling system gives back performance you already paid for.
  4. A cleaning and thermal paste replacement on an old system. Free apart from paste.
  5. The graphics card, if genuinely GPU bound.
  6. Processor and platform, which usually means motherboard and memory too.

Steps three and four deserve emphasis. A system that runs well for ten minutes and then degrades is throttling, and no new part fixes that. The overheating guide covers diagnosis.

When to build new instead

The decision point is whether the processor upgrade requires a new motherboard.

If it does, you are also buying memory, and at that point you are replacing everything except the case, power supply and storage. The incremental cost of finishing the job properly is small, and a new platform gives you an upgrade path for later.

If your platform still supports a meaningfully faster processor, upgrading in place is good value.

The honest check before spending

Before any purchase, try:

  • Lowering the two or three settings that cost the most, which for most games are shadows, effects and ray tracing
  • Enabling upscaling, which frequently recovers substantial performance at minimal visual cost
  • Capping the frame rate to something stable rather than chasing peaks

        How do I know if my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU?

        Run a monitoring overlay during normal gameplay and watch both figures. If the graphics card sits below full utilisation while the frame rate is lower than you want, something else is the limit, usually the processor. If the graphics card is pinned at full, it is the limit and a processor upgrade will change very little.

        Is more RAM a good upgrade?

        It is if you are currently short, and it does almost nothing if you are not. Running out of memory produces stuttering and long loading rather than low frame rates. 16GB remains workable in 2026 and 32GB is comfortable for modern titles with a browser open. Beyond that, gaming sees no benefit.

        Should I upgrade or build new?

        Upgrade if the platform is recent enough that a new graphics card or memory addition is the only change needed. Build new when the processor upgrade would require a new motherboard and memory as well, since at that point you are replacing most of the machine anyway and the incremental cost of finishing the job is small.

        Does a faster SSD improve frame rates?

        No, it improves loading times and reduces streaming hitches in open world games. Frame rate in steady gameplay is unaffected. Moving from a mechanical drive to any SSD is transformative for loading; moving between SSD tiers is a much smaller change that most people will not notice in games.
