Roblox Error Code 268: What Triggers It and How to Stop It
Error 268 kicks you for 'unexpected client behavior'. It usually is not cheating — it is corrupted client files, an overlay, or an anti-exploit false positive. Here is how to tell which, and fix it.
The short answer
Error 268 means a Roblox game's anti-exploit system detected client behaviour it did not expect and removed you from the experience. Genuine exploit software is the intended trigger, but corrupted client files, screen overlays that hook the Roblox window, memory-editing utilities running in the background, and an unstable connection all produce false positives. Clearing the Roblox client cache and closing overlay software resolves most legitimate cases.

You were kicked from this experience: Unexpected client behavior.
It is one of the more alarming messages Roblox can throw at you, because it sounds like an accusation. For most people getting it, it is not.
I have watched this error fire on a completely clean test machine with nothing running but Roblox and Discord. The message is written as though the client did something suspicious, but the actual trigger is far broader — and the fix depends entirely on which of four very different causes you are dealing with.
Who actually sends this kick
268 is not sent by Roblox. It is sent by a script inside the experience you were playing. Developers write their own anti-exploit checks — speed limits, teleport detection, memory validation, remote-event rate limits — and when one trips, the script calls Kick() with this message. Roblox just relays it. That is why the same behaviour gets you kicked from one game and completely ignored in another.
First: work out which kind of 268 you have
The pattern tells you the cause. Four minutes of observation saves you an hour of blind fixing.
Step 1: Clear the client cache and force a clean update
A partially-applied Roblox update leaves the client running code the server does not recognise, and strict experiences reject it outright. This is the most common cause of an instant 268 on join.
- Close Roblox completely. Open Task Manager, sort by name, and end any
RobloxPlayerBeta.exeorRobloxPlayerLauncher.exestill alive. - Press
Win + Rand paste%localappdata%\Roblox - Delete everything inside the LocalStorage folder.
- Delete everything inside the logs folder.
- Delete
GlobalBasicSettings_13.xmlif present — the number varies by version. - Launch Roblox from the website, not from a desktop shortcut, and let the launcher finish updating fully before you join anything.
That last point matters. Joining while the launcher is still patching in the background is a reliable way to produce a version mismatch.
Microsoft Store version vs desktop version
If you installed Roblox from the Microsoft Store, its files live elsewhere and the folder above may not exist. The Store version updates on Windows' schedule rather than Roblox's, which means it can sit on an old client for days. If you are getting persistent 268 on the Store build, uninstalling it and installing the desktop client from roblox.com resolves it in most cases we have seen.
Step 2: Close overlays and memory-reading software
Anti-exploit scripts look for signs that something outside the game is touching it. Legitimate software does exactly that.
Close these completely — not minimise, and not just disable the overlay toggle, since several keep their hooks loaded either way:
- Discord (or at minimum, Settings → Game Overlay → off, then restart Discord)
- Steam overlay
- NVIDIA App / GeForce Experience overlay
- Xbox Game Bar — Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar → off
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server — the most frequent single offender
- OBS, if you are using game capture rather than window capture
- Wallpaper Engine, Razer Synapse, Logitech G Hub with in-game overlays
- Any macro software, key remapper, or autoclicker — these are the ones that genuinely do look like cheating
Restart Roblox and play for ten minutes. If the kicks stop, reintroduce them one at a time until you find the offender.
Autoclickers and macros are not a false positive
If you are running an autoclicker, a keyboard macro that automates gameplay, or anything that plays for you, 268 is working as intended. Most Roblox experiences prohibit automation in their rules, and continuing after being kicked risks a game-level ban. This is the one category where the anti-exploit is right.
Step 3: Rule out actual exploit tooling
I have to cover this plainly. If any of the following are or have been installed, they are the cause:
- Executors, script injectors, or anything advertising "Roblox scripts"
- Cheat Engine or another memory editor, even if it is open for a different game
- DLL injectors of any kind
- Modified Roblox clients or "Roblox mods"
Cheat Engine deserves a specific mention because people run it for single-player games and forget it is open. It does not have to be attached to Roblox — several anti-exploit scripts scan the running process list and kick on the name alone.
Uninstalling an executor is often not enough. Many leave DLLs and registry entries behind, and some hook the client at launch regardless. A clean Roblox reinstall after removing the tool is warranted here, which is one of the very few situations where reinstalling Roblox is genuinely the right move.
This is where a real ban comes from
The 268 kick itself does not ban you. Roblox's own detection, which runs separately from any game's script, does. Executors are also a common malware delivery route — a large share of "free Roblox script" downloads carry credential stealers that go after your Roblox cookie and any browser passwords. There is no safe version of this software.
Step 4: Fix the connection instability that triggers false kicks
Many anti-exploit scripts validate movement by comparing your reported position against how far you should physically be able to travel between updates. When your connection stalls for a second and then delivers a burst of queued packets, your character appears to have teleported — and a strict script kicks you for speed hacking.
This is why 268 sometimes correlates perfectly with rubber-banding.
The fixes are the same ones that fix lag generally:
- Move to Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. Jitter is the enemy here, not bandwidth.
- Flush DNS:
ipconfig /flushdnsin an elevated Command Prompt. - Turn off any VPN, which adds both latency and variance.
- Pause background uploads — cloud sync and game downloads fill your router's queue and cause exactly this stalling pattern.
If your connection is genuinely unstable, patching around it per-game is a losing strategy. Our guide to lowering ping and jitter covers the changes that actually measure, including the queue management fix that eliminates the burst pattern responsible for these false positives.
Step 5: Check for conflicting security software
Some antivirus products with "exploit protection" or "memory shield" features inject their own code into running processes to monitor them. To a Roblox anti-exploit script, that is indistinguishable from an injector.
Add an exclusion for %localappdata%\Roblox in your antivirus, and specifically disable any behavioural or memory-protection module for that folder. Kaspersky, Bitdefender and Malwarebytes' exploit protection have all been reported to do this, and we reproduced it once with Malwarebytes' Exploit Protection enabled on the Windows 10 box.
When 268 only affects one game
If everything else on Roblox is fine, you have not got a client problem. That experience's thresholds are simply tight.
Things that legitimately trip strict anti-exploit scripts:
- Using a movement mechanic the developer did not anticipate
- Being in an unusual position after a physics glitch
- Very fast, precise input — some scripts flag click rates above a threshold
- Rejoining a server too quickly after leaving
- Playing on a device with an unusual screen resolution or aspect ratio, which occasionally breaks UI-based checks
There is no client-side fix for a threshold set too low. What works is telling the developer — most games have a Discord, and anti-exploit false positives are a bug they generally want to hear about because they are losing legitimate players to it.

Related codes worth knowing
267 is the neighbouring code and it is worth understanding the difference: 267 is a deliberate kick by a script — a moderator command, an idle timeout, a ban list — while 268 is specifically the "unexpected behaviour" branch of that same mechanism. Our 267 guide covers the moderation side.

Frequently asked questions
Does error 268 mean Roblox thinks I am cheating?
It means a script in that specific experience decided your client did something it did not expect. That is not the same as Roblox moderation accusing you of cheating. Most 268 kicks come from a game's own anti-exploit code, which is written by the game's developer and is often extremely aggressive — false positives from lag spikes, overlays and even fast legitimate movement are common.
Will error 268 get my account banned?
On its own, no. A 268 kick is a per-experience event and does not create a moderation record against your account. If you are actually running exploit software, Roblox's own detection is a separate system and that can result in a ban — but the 268 message itself is not a ban notice and does not lead to one.
Why do I get 268 in only one game?
Because 268 comes from the experience, not from Roblox. Each developer writes their own anti-exploit checks with their own thresholds. A game with a strict speed check will kick a player whose connection stutters, while every other game on the platform ignores the same behaviour. If one game kicks you and nothing else does, the threshold in that game is the problem.
Can Discord or MSI Afterburner cause error 268?
Yes, occasionally. Anything that injects an overlay into the Roblox window or reads its memory can look like tampering to a strict anti-exploit script. Discord, Steam, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, GeForce Experience and Xbox Game Bar are the usual suspects. Closing them for one session is a fast way to confirm it.
I get 268 the moment I join. What is different about that?
An instant kick is usually a version mismatch or a corrupted client rather than a behavioural check — the script has not had time to observe anything. Clear the LocalStorage folder, let the Roblox launcher fully update, and relaunch. If it persists on an up-to-date client, the game may be blocking something about your account or platform rather than your behaviour.
