Roblox Error 504 and Gateway Timeouts
A 504 is Roblox failing to answer itself. Recognising that saves you an hour of pointless troubleshooting.
The short answer
Roblox error 504 is a gateway timeout, meaning one part of Roblox's own infrastructure did not respond to another in time, and it is therefore a platform-side failure rather than a client problem. No local troubleshooting affects it, and the correct response is to check the Roblox status page and wait. Repeated 504s affecting only one player, which is rare, point at DNS resolution reaching an unhealthy endpoint.

A 504 is worth recognising on sight because it tells you to stop troubleshooting.
Gateway timeout means one Roblox service asked another Roblox service for something and did not get an answer. Your machine is not part of that conversation.
Do not troubleshoot a 504
Reinstalling, flushing settings and changing firewall rules cannot influence Roblox's internal service timeouts. Check the status page and wait.
Step 1: Check the status page before anything else
Go to status.roblox.com. If anything is degraded, you have your answer and the only useful action is patience.
That table is the single most useful thing to remember. 500s mean the server failed. 400s mean your request was refused. They need completely different responses.
Step 2: Rule out your own DNS if it persists alone
If friends are unaffected and 504s continue for you specifically over hours, stale DNS may be routing you to an endpoint that is no longer healthy.
Run ipconfig /flushdns in an administrator Command Prompt, and consider setting DNS to 1.1.1.1 in your adapter settings. This is the one client-side cause, and it is uncommon.
Resist the temptation to refresh repeatedly during an outage. Rapid retries can trigger a 429 rate limit on top of the original problem, which then looks like a second fault. The HTTP error guide covers that interaction.

Can I fix a 504 myself?
Almost never, because a gateway timeout means one Roblox service did not hear back from another Roblox service. Nothing on your machine participates in that exchange. The only exception is when stale DNS routes you to an unhealthy endpoint, which is uncommon and fixed by flushing DNS.
How long do 504 outages usually last?
Typically minutes rather than hours, because gateway timeouts are often symptoms of load spikes that autoscaling resolves. Large events, popular game launches and viral experiences all produce brief windows of them. If it persists past an hour, the status page will normally acknowledge it.
Why do I get 504 on the website but games still work?
Because Roblox is many separate services, and the web layer failing does not mean the game servers have. You can frequently keep playing an experience you already joined while the website returns errors. This is normal and does not indicate anything about your connection.
