Roblox Error Code 524: Why You Can't Join, and How to Get In
Error 524 is a permissions problem, not a technical one. Expired private server links, age restrictions, friends-only settings and group requirements all produce it. Here is how to identify which.
The short answer
Error 524 means you do not have permission to join that specific place. The five causes are an expired or revoked private server link, an experience set to friends-only or group-only, an age-restricted experience your account does not meet the requirement for, a VIP server you were removed from, or an unpublished place. There is no client-side fix — the resolution is to obtain valid access from the server owner or to complete age verification on your Roblox account.

Error 524 gets misdiagnosed more than any other Roblox code, and it is because of a single misunderstanding: people treat it as a technical fault.
It is not. Your internet is fine. Your client is fine. Roblox's servers are fine. Roblox checked whether you are allowed into that specific place, decided you are not, and told you so.
That means every router restart, DNS flush and reinstall you will find recommended for this code is wasted effort.
What 524 actually means
The full message is usually "You do not have permission to join this game." Roblox's web service resolved the place, checked your account against the place's access rules, and returned a permission denial. The connection worked — that is the important part. Anything you change on your own machine cannot alter the answer.
The five causes, ranked by how common they are
Step 1: Try the public version of the game
Thirty seconds, and it splits the problem in half.
Go to the experience's page on the Roblox website — not through your link — and press the main Play button.
- It works. Your account is fine and the game is fine. The problem is specific to the private server link you were using. Skip to the private server section.
- The Play button is missing or greyed out. The developer has taken the experience private, or it has been moderated. Nothing you can do but wait.
- You get 524 here too. It is an account-level restriction — age, group or friends. Continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Check the access requirements on the game page
Scroll down the experience page and look at three things.
The age label. Roblox labels experiences by content maturity, and accounts under the stated age are blocked from joining. This catches out a lot of people whose account has an incorrect birth date — often set years earlier by a parent, or entered wrong at signup. If your account age is genuinely below the requirement, that is the system working as designed.
Group requirements. Some experiences restrict entry to members of a Roblox group, or to a specific rank within it. The requirement is usually stated in the description. Joining the group takes a moment; getting the required rank may not be automatic.
Whether it is a paid access experience. A small number of games charge Robux for entry. If you have not bought access, you get a permission error rather than a purchase prompt when joining via a direct link.
Verifying your age
If your account has the wrong birth date, Roblox's ID verification in Settings → Account Info can raise your verified age. It requires a government ID or a phone-based check, and it applies immediately once completed. Note that Roblox does not allow lowering an account age this way, and it will not help an account that genuinely belongs to someone below the requirement.
Step 3: Fix the private server problem
Private servers are where most 524s come from, and the reason is that their links are more fragile than people realise.
A private server link stops working when:
- The owner clicks Generate new link. Every previously shared link dies instantly.
- The owner removes you from the allowed players list.
- The server's Robux subscription lapses and it is not renewed.
- The owner deletes the server entirely.
- The game updates in a way that invalidates old server instances — rarer, but it happens.
What to ask the owner to do, in order of what works most often:
- Open the experience page → Servers tab → their private server → copy the current link and send it fresh.
- Add your username directly to the server's allowed list, which does not depend on a link at all.
- Confirm the server is still active and paid for. Expired servers vanish quietly.
A link shared in Discord three months ago is probably dead
This is worth stating plainly because it accounts for an enormous share of 524 reports. People bookmark a private server link, come back weeks later, and assume something has broken on their end. The link expired. Always ask for a new one before troubleshooting anything.
Step 4: Rule out account state
A handful of account-level conditions produce 524 across multiple games.
Signed into the wrong account. More common than it sounds on shared or family devices. Check the username in the top-right of the Roblox website matches the account that was given access.
A stale login session. If you have been signed in for a very long time, the session token can go out of sync with your current permissions. Sign out fully on both the website and the client, then sign back in.
Parental controls. Roblox's parental controls can restrict which experiences a child account can access by content level. If the account is managed, the restriction must be changed from the parent account.
A VPN in the way. VPNs are not usually a cause of 524 specifically, but a VPN that puts you in a region with different content restrictions can change which experiences you are allowed into. Turn it off and retest — it is a ten-second check.

Do Roblox private server links expire?
Yes, and this is the single most common cause of 524. A private server link stops working when the owner regenerates it, when the server's subscription lapses, or when the owner removes you from the allowed list. Links shared in Discord months earlier are dead far more often than people expect. Ask the owner to send a fresh link rather than reusing the old one.
Why do I get 524 on a game I could play yesterday?
Something about the access changed rather than something about your setup. The most likely explanations are that the developer switched the experience to private or friends-only while working on it, that the game added an age or verification requirement, or that a private server you were using expired. Check the experience's main page — if the Play button is missing there too, it has been made private.
Can age verification fix error 524?
It can, when the experience is age-restricted. Roblox applies age labels to experiences, and accounts below the stated age cannot join regardless of anything else. Verifying your age through Roblox's ID verification in account settings resolves it if your account age was set incorrectly. If your account genuinely is below the age requirement, there is no fix and there should not be one.
Is 524 caused by my firewall or internet?
No. 524 is returned by Roblox's web service after it has checked whether you are allowed into that place — which means your connection worked perfectly. If your network were the problem you would see a connection code such as 279 instead. This is worth knowing because a large amount of advice online tells people to reset their router for 524, which cannot possibly help.
How do I get permission to join a friend's private server?
The owner has to either send you the current private server link, or add you to the server's allowed list from the experience's private servers page. On Roblox, private servers have a specific link containing an access code — if the owner clicks 'Generate new link', every previously shared link stops working immediately.
