Roblox Trading Explained — Value, RAP and How People Lose Everything
RAP is not value. Here's how the Roblox limited market really prices items, the common trade scams, and why most traders end up down.
The short answer
RAP (recent average price) is a rolling average of the last hundred sales and is not the same as an item's real value — items with low trade volume can hold an inflated RAP that no one will actually pay. Real value is what the item trades for right now, which for many limiteds is well below RAP. Most trade losses come from accepting RAP-based offers, and most account losses come from off-platform trades and fake middleman services.

Roblox trading has a specific trap built into it, and it is a number the platform itself displays: RAP.
People treat RAP as value. It is not value. It is a backward-looking average, and the gap between it and what someone will actually pay is where almost every trading loss happens.
RAP is not value
RAP is the average of the last one hundred sales. An item that sold heavily two years ago keeps that number even if nobody would buy it today at a tenth of it. High RAP with low demand is the standard scammer's currency.
How value actually forms
An item with high demand and low supply trades above RAP. An item with low demand trades below it, sometimes far below. Learning which is which is the entire skill of trading, and it takes months.
The trades that lose you value
The RAP overpay. Someone offers you four high-RAP items for your one high-demand item. The RAP total favours you. You have just traded a thing people want for four things nobody wants. This is not against the rules and nothing will be reversed.
The downgrade chain. A series of small trades, each losing a little demand for a little RAP. Six months later your inventory shows a healthy RAP and you cannot trade any of it.
The rushed trade. Pressure to accept "before I change my mind" is the oldest tactic there is. A genuine trade will still be there in an hour.
The scams that lose you the account
Never trade off-platform —
Every legitimate trade completes inside the Roblox trade window in a single action. Discord-based "deals", trust trades and middlemen exist to take your items with no recourse.
Never enter credentials anywhere but roblox.com —
Value-checker sites, trade calculators and inventory viewers that ask you to log in are credential harvesters. There is no legitimate reason for a third party to need your password.
Turn on two-step verification and the trade PIN 5 min
The account PIN locks trading and settings behind a separate code. It is the single most effective protection against someone who has gained access to your session, and it takes five minutes.
Should you trade at all?
Honestly, most people should not. The market rewards patience across months and the discipline to say no to trades that look good on paper. The typical casual trader accepts a few RAP-favourable deals and ends up holding an inventory nobody wants.
If you enjoy the market as its own game, it is genuinely interesting. If you are treating it as a route to value, the odds are not with you.

Key takeaways
Frequently asked questions
What is RAP and why is it misleading?
RAP is the recent average price, calculated from the last hundred sales of an item. It is misleading because it is backward-looking and volume-blind: an item that sold a hundred times two years ago at a high price retains that RAP even if nobody would pay a fraction of it today. Low-demand items with high RAP are the standard tool of trade scammers, who offer them as if the number were real.
How do I know what an item is really worth?
By demand, not by RAP. Look at how quickly the item sells when listed at various prices, whether the community values it above or below RAP, and how many copies exist. Items with high demand and low supply trade above RAP; items with low demand trade well below it regardless of the number shown. If you cannot tell, assume the item is worth less than its RAP.
Is Roblox trading worth doing?
For most people, no. It requires real market knowledge, patience across months, and the discipline to refuse bad trades, and the majority of casual traders end up net down because they accept RAP-based offers. If you enjoy the market as a game in itself, it is entertaining. If you are treating it as a way to gain value, the odds are against you.
What is the most common trade scam?
The overpay-on-RAP trade, where someone offers several high-RAP low-demand items for one high-demand item. On paper you gain RAP; in reality you have traded something people want for several things nobody wants. It is not against the rules, which is why it is so common — the platform will not reverse it and no report will help.
Are middleman services safe?
Almost never. A genuine middleman would need you to hand over items on trust, and there is no mechanism on Roblox that protects that. The overwhelming majority of middleman offers are theft, and the ones that are not still carry the risk. If a trade cannot be completed through the platform's own trade window in one action, do not do it.
