Roblox Voice Chat — How It Works and How to Control It
Voice chat needs age verification and a verified email. Here's the full setup, the safety controls, and how to disable it properly.

Roblox voice chat requires the account holder to be 13 or over, to have a verified email address, and to complete age verification with a government ID or a facial age estimate. Once enabled it can be switched off again at any time in Privacy settings, and parents can lock the setting behind a parent PIN so a child cannot re-enable it.

Roblox voice chat generates more confusion than almost any other setting on the platform, largely because when the requirements are unmet the toggle simply greys out without telling you why.
Three requirements, all mandatory
Aged 13 or over. A verified email address. Completed age verification. Miss any one and the setting is greyed out with no explanation of which one.
Step 1: The three requirements
The birth date issue is worth flagging. A date entered incorrectly at signup can be corrected, but the process is deliberately awkward because it is an obvious abuse route. Get it right at signup.

Windows or mobile has to allow Roblox microphone access separately. A correctly configured Roblox account with OS permission denied produces silence with no error.
Turning it off is the same toggle, at any time, with no penalty or waiting period.
Step 3: Locking it for a child account
This is the part that actually matters for parents.
Without a parent PIN, the voice chat toggle is just a setting on the account, and anyone using that account can switch it back on. With a PIN, changing privacy settings requires the code.
The PIN is the step that makes every other parental control meaningful. Setting content restrictions without one is a suggestion rather than a control.
Set the PIN before anything else
Every other control on a child's Roblox account is reversible by the child until a parent PIN exists. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between a control and a preference.
When it does not work
Nobody can hear you. Check OS microphone permissions first, then that the correct input device is selected at the OS level. Roblox uses the system default.
You cannot hear anyone. Voice is opt-in per account, so a server with no voice-enabled players is silent and normal. Check the experience supports voice at all.
It worked and then stopped. Voice access can be suspended for reported conduct. Check for a notification on the account.
