This gives you room for a full library plus the temporary space large patches need while they unpack. Keep an eye on the free-space figure rather than the game count.

Why the number is lower than you expected: a “1 TB” drive is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes to the manufacturer but 931 GB to your operating system, which counts in binary. Nothing is being stolen — the two are just measuring differently.

The three things that eat your drive

People plan storage by adding up game sizes and are then surprised when the drive fills anyway. Three costs get left out of that sum every time.

1. The capacity you never had

Around 7% of any drive vanishes into the difference between how manufacturers and operating systems count. A 2 TB drive presents as about 1,863 GB. This is not a defect and not worth arguing about — just budget for it.

2. Free-space headroom

This is the one that bites people. An SSD writes to empty blocks; when there are few left, the controller has to read, erase and rewrite existing blocks to make room, and write performance falls off a cliff. Running a drive at 98% full will make your whole system feel sluggish in a way that looks like a hardware fault.

Keep at least 10% free. The calculator subtracts it by default because pretending it is available storage leads to exactly the problem you are trying to avoid.

3. Patch scratch space

A 40 GB update frequently needs 40 GB of temporary space on top of the installed game while it unpacks and verifies. If you are sitting at 30 GB free with a big patch pending, it will fail — and on some platforms it fails after downloading the whole thing.

Practical sizing

  • 500 GB — workable only if you play two or three things at a time and are disciplined about uninstalling.
  • 1 TB — the sensible floor for a PC in 2026. Comfortable for a mixed library, tight if you play several AAA titles at once.
  • 2 TB — the sweet spot on price per gigabyte, and enough that you stop thinking about storage entirely.
  • 4 TB and up — worth it if you keep a large permanent library or record gameplay. Otherwise a second 2 TB drive later is usually the cheaper path.

Common questions

How many games fit on a 1 TB SSD?+

Once Windows and a 10% free-space buffer are subtracted, you have roughly 780 GB for games. That is about eight modern AAA titles at 95 GB each, or a much larger number if your library skews towards competitive shooters and indies. Live-service games are the ones that quietly consume it.

Why does my 1 TB drive only show 931 GB?+

Drive manufacturers count 1 TB as a trillion bytes. Windows counts in binary, where a terabyte is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. The drive holds exactly what it says — the two systems just label the same quantity differently. Expect about 93% of the advertised number.

Do I need to leave free space on an SSD?+

Yes. SSDs need free blocks to write efficiently, and once you go past roughly 90% full, write speeds can drop sharply as the controller shuffles data to make room. Ten percent free is the practical minimum; fifteen is more comfortable on a drive you write to often.

Can I install games on an external drive?+

On PC, yes, and for older or less demanding titles an external SSD over USB 3.2 is genuinely fine. On PS5, external drives can store PS5 games but cannot run them — you have to move them back to internal storage first. Xbox Series consoles require the proprietary expansion card to run Series-optimised titles.

Does a faster SSD improve FPS?+

Not meaningfully. It improves load times and, in games with heavy streaming, reduces texture pop-in. Moving from a hard drive to any SSD is transformative. Moving from a SATA SSD to a PCIe 4.0 NVMe is barely perceptible in most games, whatever the sequential read benchmark says.
