Wi-Fi or Ethernet for Gaming — What the Difference Actually Is
It's not about speed. Ethernet wins on consistency, and consistency is what decides whether a game feels responsive.
The short answer
Ethernet is better for gaming not because it is faster but because it is consistent — games need very little bandwidth but are highly sensitive to latency variation, and Wi-Fi produces jitter and occasional spikes that a cable does not. If a cable is genuinely impossible, moving to the 5 GHz band, reducing distance and avoiding channel congestion recovers most of the difference.

The Wi-Fi versus Ethernet argument usually gets framed around speed, which is the wrong axis entirely. Games need almost no bandwidth. A competitive shooter uses a few megabits per second.
What games need is consistency, and that is where the two differ.
Jitter, not ping
A steady 40 ms feels better than a connection averaging 25 ms that periodically spikes to 200. Your game predicts and interpolates based on expected timing, and a spike breaks that prediction — which you experience as rubber-banding or a shot that should have hit. Wi-Fi's problem is variance, not average.
What actually differs
The two rows that matter are jitter and spikes. Everything else is close enough not to notice.
If you can run a cable, run one
It is not glamorous advice. Flat Ethernet cable runs under carpet edges and along skirting, and a long cable costs very little. For a machine that lives in one place, this is a one-off job that permanently removes an entire class of problem.
If you genuinely cannot
Use 5 GHz, not 2.4 GHz 5 min
2.4 GHz has three usable channels, travels through walls well, and is consequently saturated with every neighbour's network plus microwaves and other devices. 5 GHz has many more channels and far less congestion. Connect to the 5 GHz network name explicitly rather than letting the device choose.
Reduce distance and obstructions 10 min
Signal strength falls off sharply, and walls — particularly those containing metal, pipework or foil insulation — attenuate heavily. One room closer, or one wall fewer, often changes the connection quality substantially.
Change the channel 10 min
Router admin page, look for the wireless channel setting. If every network in range is on the same channel, moving to a clear one reduces contention directly. Most routers pick automatically and most pick badly.
Enable smart queue management or QoS 15 min
This is the highest-value router setting for a shared household. It prioritises small, time-critical game packets over large downloads, which stops your ping spiking whenever someone else streams or updates something.
Powerline: the middle option
Reasonable when a cable is impossible and Wi-Fi is poor, but with a large caveat: performance depends entirely on your house wiring.
Two sockets on the same circuit work well. Sockets on different circuits, or a run through an older consumer unit, can be worse than Wi-Fi. There is no way to predict it from specifications — you have to test, and be prepared to return it.
