Xbox Sign-In Errors: Decoding the 0x87DD Prefix
Every code starting 0x87DD is an Xbox Live service problem. Which one you get narrows the cause considerably.
The short answer
Xbox error codes beginning 0x87DD relate to Xbox Live sign-in and service authentication rather than to the console hardware or a specific game. 0x87DD0006 in particular indicates a sign-in failure that is usually resolved by signing out and back in, or by waiting out a service incident. Checking the Xbox status page first distinguishes a service outage from a local account problem.

Xbox error codes look impenetrable until you learn that the prefix does most of the work.
Everything beginning 0x87DD is Xbox Live. Not your console, not the game, not your storage. The conversation between your console and Microsoft's service.
Read the prefix first
0x87DD is Xbox Live services. 0x8027 is apps and games. 0x80070 is system level. The prefix tells you which category of fix is even relevant.
The 0x87DD family
Step 1: Check the Xbox status page
Confirm the service is healthy 2 minutes
Open the Xbox status page on a phone rather than the console. If sign-in or account services show a degradation, you have your answer and the correct action is to wait. Sign-in errors cluster during incidents to a degree that makes checking first genuinely worthwhile.
People burn an hour re-adding accounts during an outage and then credit the fix when the service recovers. Two minutes of checking prevents that.
Step 2: Sign out fully and back in
Press the Xbox button, go to Profile and system, then choose Sign out. Do not just switch profiles. Sign out completely, then sign back in.
This discards the cached authentication token, which is the actual cause in most persistent cases. A token issued during a service wobble stays broken until it is replaced, and a normal restart can preserve it.
Step 3: Power cycle and clear the local cache
Hold the console's power button for ten seconds until it shuts down fully. Unplug the power cable for thirty seconds. Plug back in and start.
That thirty seconds is not superstition. It drains residual power and forces the console to clear its cache on the next boot, which a menu restart does not do.
If the error survives all three steps, remove the account from the console and add it again. Check first that your saves have synced to the cloud, since local unsynced saves are cleared with the account.
The broader Xbox error code guide covers the other prefixes, and the network guide handles the cases where sign-in fails because the connection itself cannot reach the service.

Frequently asked questions
What does the 0x87DD prefix actually mean?
It designates Xbox Live service errors, as distinct from 0x8027 which covers app and game problems and 0x80070 which covers system-level errors. Knowing the prefix immediately narrows the cause: a 0x87DD code will never be fixed by reinstalling a game, because the failure is happening between your console and the Xbox Live service.
Why does signing out and back in work so often?
Because the console caches an authentication token, and when that token becomes stale or was issued during a service problem, every subsequent request fails. Signing out discards it and signing back in requests a fresh one. This is why the fix works reliably and why simply restarting sometimes does not, since a restart can preserve the cached token.
Should I remove and re-add my account?
Only after signing out and a full power cycle have both failed. Removing an account is safe in the sense that nothing is deleted from your Microsoft account, but it does clear local saves that have not synced to the cloud. Confirm your saves are synced before doing it.
Does this affect Game Pass access?
Yes, because Game Pass entitlements are verified against Xbox Live. A sign-in failure means the console cannot confirm your subscription, so Game Pass titles will refuse to launch even though they are installed. Once sign-in is restored the entitlement check passes again with no further action.
