Sustained performance, screen refresh rate and thermal design matter far more than peak benchmark scores on a cheap gaming phone.

A 120Hz screen and a chip that holds seventy percent of its peak under load will outperform a faster chip in a thinner body. Storage type and RAM amount matter less than most buying guides claim.

The specification that sells a budget gaming phone is peak performance. The specification that determines whether it is any good is what happens fifteen minutes into a session.

I ran three mid-range handsets through half-hour sessions of the same demanding game. All three benchmarked within about ten percent of each other. After twenty minutes, the spread was over forty percent.

Thermals are the whole story at this price

Cheap phones have small heat spreaders and plastic or glass backs with nowhere for heat to go. The chip protects itself by dropping clocks. Peak scores are measured in the first thirty seconds, which is not when you are playing.

What the throttling looks like

A phone that settles at seventy percent of a modest peak beats a phone that settles at fifty percent of a high peak. Review sites that publish only the peak figure are giving you the least useful number.

What to prioritise

Sustained performance figures. Look for reviews that publish a stability percentage from a sustained stress test. Anything above about seventy percent is good for this price bracket. Below sixty is a phone that will frustrate you in long sessions.

Screen refresh rate. 120Hz makes a real difference in games that support it. Check that the phone actually runs 120Hz at full resolution rather than dropping to a lower resolution to sustain it.

Touch sampling rate. Separate from refresh rate and rarely advertised. This is how often the screen registers your finger, and it is what makes aiming feel direct or laggy. 240Hz or above is what you want.

Battery capacity over charging speed. Fast charging is convenient. A larger battery means the phone is not simultaneously running the charger and the game, which is the worst thermal case there is.

      Storage speed is worth a note. The jump from eMMC to UFS is real and affects load times noticeably. The jump from UFS 3.1 to 4.0 is not something you will perceive in a game.

      Before buying anything, these cost nothing:

      1. Take the case off during long sessions. Worth several percent of sustained performance on most phones.
      2. Do not charge while playing. The charger and the chip heat the same chassis, and this is the single worst thing for throttling.
      3. Close background apps properly. Not the recents-swipe theatre, but force-stopping anything that syncs.
      4. Turn off the always-on display and adaptive brightness during sessions. Both cause frame pacing hiccups on some handsets.

        Do I need a dedicated gaming phone?

        No. The gaming-branded phones mostly add cooling, shoulder triggers and RGB, and they carry a price premium for it. A well-cooled ordinary mid-range phone with a high refresh screen delivers a very similar experience for less. The one genuine advantage of gaming phones is the vapour chamber cooling, which does measurably extend sustained performance.

        How much RAM do I need?

        Eight gigabytes is comfortable and twelve is more than any mobile game needs today. RAM affects how many apps stay in memory in the background, not how well a game runs once it is loaded. Buying up from eight to sixteen gigabytes to improve gaming is money spent on the wrong component.

        Does a 120Hz screen matter on a phone?

        It matters for the games that support it, which is a growing but incomplete list. Where it applies the difference in touch responsiveness is genuinely large, particularly in shooters where aim adjustment happens frame by frame. Where the game caps at 60fps it does nothing except drain battery faster.

        Is a case bad for gaming performance?

        Thick cases genuinely do reduce sustained performance by trapping heat, and the effect is measurable over a twenty-minute session. If you play long sessions, take the case off, or use a thin one. This is one of the cheapest performance improvements available and almost nobody does it.
