Phones throttle hard and fast. Here's the actual order of causes, and the settings that keep a session stable rather than fast for ten minutes.

Phone gaming performance is not really a question of how fast the chip is. It is a question of how long the chip can run fast before the phone gets too hot.
Every flagship phone can produce excellent frame rates. For about eight minutes.
Heat is the whole story
There is no fan. Sustained load raises the temperature until the system reduces clocks to protect the hardware. Everything that improves sustained mobile performance is really about heat — and that reframes which settings matter.
Step 1: It is a heat budget, not a power problem
The last row is the number that matters. Your real mobile performance is the equilibrium point, not the first five minutes — and benchmarks generally measure the first five minutes.
Step 2: Cap the frame rate
Counter-intuitive and correct: an uncapped game runs hot, throttles, and ends up slower than one capped at a sustainable rate.
A locked 60 for an hour beats 90 for eight minutes followed by 45 for the rest. It also feels better, because a stable frame rate is more pleasant than a high one that degrades.
If the game offers 30, 60 and 90 options, 60 is usually the right choice on a phone. If it offers a 120 mode, that is a marketing feature you will experience for a few minutes at a time.
Step 3: Remove the heat sources

A case is insulation. This is the single largest free improvement to sustained mobile performance and it takes five seconds.
Lower screen brightness 10 sec
The display is the largest power consumer on a phone, and power becomes heat. This improves battery life and delays throttling simultaneously, which almost no other setting does.
Do not charge while playing —
Charging generates heat in the same body already struggling to shed it. If you must, use a slower charger — charging speed and heat output are directly related.
Stop active background work 2 min
Not closing apps, which modern phones suspend anyway. Stopping downloads, uploads, photo backups and syncing, which are genuinely consuming capacity and generating heat.
Play somewhere cool, not in direct sun —
Ambient temperature sets the baseline the phone works from. Outside on a warm day, a phone throttles within a couple of minutes regardless of settings.
The battery side
Aeroplane mode for offline games. The cellular modem searching for signal is a genuine and continuous cost, worst in a moving vehicle where it re-registers constantly.
Disable high refresh rate when you do not need it. On a phone the difference in perceived smoothness for many games is small and the battery cost is not.
Turn off haptics. Small individually, meaningful over an hour of play.
Watch for games that keep the screen at full brightness. Some override system settings. If your battery empties unusually fast in one specific game, this is often why.
Active coolers
For heavy competitive mobile play, a clip-on cooler is genuinely effective — it can prevent throttling entirely across a long session, which is a larger performance difference than any settings change.
For casual play it is unnecessary, and removing the case captures a good share of the benefit for nothing.
