Competitive FPS Settings — Field of View, Frame Rate and Visual Clarity
Settings guides copy pro configs without explaining them. Here's what each setting does to your ability to see and hit things.
The short answer
The settings that measurably affect competitive performance are frame rate consistency, field of view, and anything that reduces visual clutter around enemy models. A locked frame rate at or near your monitor's refresh rate matters more than a higher unstable one, because inconsistent frame pacing makes tracking harder. Shadows and effects should be lowered for clarity rather than for performance.

Most competitive settings guides are a list of numbers copied from a professional's configuration file. That is useless without knowing what each one does, because half of them depend on your monitor and how close you sit to it.
Here is what each setting actually changes.
Clarity, not frame rate
On capable hardware, the argument for low settings is not performance. It is that shadows, foliage and particle effects hide enemy models. Lowering them makes targets easier to see against the environment, and that is the real competitive benefit.
The settings that matter
Field of view is personal, not universal
This is the setting people copy most and should copy least.
A wider field of view shows more around you, which helps awareness. It also makes everything smaller on screen, including the enemy you are trying to hit. That is a genuine trade.
Which side of the trade suits you depends on your monitor size and viewing distance. Someone sitting close to a large display gets more benefit from a lower value than someone further from a small one, because the angular size is already large.
Pick a value, play a week, adjust once. Do not change it every session.
Frame rate: consistency over peak
Cap 3 to 5 below your refresh rate 5 min
141 on a 144 Hz display, 237 on 240 Hz. Use an external limiter for the most consistent frame pacing. The stability is worth more than the extra frames.

If you cannot hold the cap, you are producing an unstable rate anyway and the cap achieves nothing. Lower settings until you can.
Set up variable refresh rate correctly 10 min
G-Sync or FreeSync on, driver V-Sync on, in-game V-Sync off, plus the frame cap. This specific combination gives tear-free output at low latency. Any other combination gives you one or the other.
Outside the game
Digital vibrance in the graphics driver. Increasing it makes enemy models separate from backgrounds more clearly. Widely used and entirely legitimate.
Monitor processing off. Most displays ship with picture enhancement modes enabled that add latency. Enabling the display's game mode disables the worst of them.
Overlays off. Discord, Steam and driver overlays add latency and occasionally cause stutter. Off during competitive play.

Should I use the highest field of view available?

Is playing on low settings actually an advantage?
Partly, and for a reason people misstate. The advantage is not really performance on capable hardware; it is visual clarity. Lower settings remove shadows, foliage detail and particle effects that obscure enemy models, making targets easier to pick out against the environment. That is a genuine competitive benefit independent of frame rate.
Does resolution affect aim?
Higher resolution makes distant enemies clearer and easier to identify, which helps. Some players use a stretched or lower resolution because it makes models appear wider, which is a real if slightly unsporting advantage in games that permit it. For most people, native resolution with settings lowered for clarity is the better balance.
What about display settings outside the game?
Digital vibrance or saturation adjustment in the graphics driver is widely used and makes enemy models stand out against backgrounds more clearly. Turning off any display processing modes, which add latency, matters too — many monitors ship with picture enhancement enabled by default.
