Crosshair Settings and Placement in Shooters

Good players are not faster. Their crosshair was already where the enemy appeared, which removes the need to be fast.

The short answer

Crosshair placement means keeping your aim at head height and pre-aimed at likely enemy positions while moving, which reduces the distance and time required to land the first shot. It produces larger improvements than raw aim training because it removes the need for speed rather than increasing it. A small, high-contrast crosshair with minimal movement aids precise placement more than elaborate designs.

Watch a good player and it looks like reactions. Watch closely and it is not: their crosshair was already there.

Placement removes the need to be fast, which is a substantially easier problem than becoming fast.

Head height, always

Your crosshair should sit at the height a head will appear, not at the floor. Most newer players aim slightly down while moving and pay for it in every engagement.

What placement means in practice

Three habits, all of which apply while you are moving rather than when you are shooting:

  1. Head height. Your crosshair sits where a head will be, not at the ground or the horizon.
  2. Pre-aimed at angles. Pointed at the corner or doorway an enemy would come from, before they do.
  3. Leading your movement. Aim where you are about to be looking, not where you have just looked.
Placement in common situations

Why this beats aim training

Aim training increases how fast your aim can travel. Placement reduces how far it has to travel.

Halving the required distance produces a larger practical improvement than a modest increase in speed, and it is available immediately rather than after weeks of practice.

It also compounds with everything else. Better placement makes your existing aim more effective, makes aim assist work better on controller, and reduces the number of engagements that come down to a fast duel at all.

Crosshair settings that support it

Small. A large crosshair obscures exactly the pixels you are trying to aim at.

Static, not dynamic. Dynamic crosshairs expand while moving to indicate reduced accuracy. You already know you are moving, and the expansion hides your aim point.

High contrast. Green or cyan works in most environments. Bright red disappears against certain backgrounds and against blood effects.

No centre dot, or a small one. Personal preference, but the outline should not be so dense that it hides a distant head.

Consistent across games. Using a similar crosshair everywhere builds a stronger sense of where your aim actually points.

Practising it

Play one session attending only to where your crosshair is while moving. Not aiming, not shooting, just placement.

It feels slow and awkward. That is the cost of moving an unconscious habit into conscious attention temporarily.

After a few sessions it becomes automatic again, and then it costs nothing and keeps working. This is one of the few improvements that genuinely sticks.
