How to Aim Better With a Controller
Most controller players use default settings that were chosen for safety, not accuracy. Two settings change everything.

Controller aiming improves most from setting the deadzone as low as the stick allows without drift, and from choosing a response curve that matches your play style rather than accepting the default. Default deadzones are set conservatively to accommodate worn controllers, which costs precision on a healthy one. Controller defaults are chosen to work acceptably on every controller, including worn ones. On a healthy controller that costs you precision you did not need to give up.
Two settings account for most of the available improvement.
Lower the deadzone
Defaults accommodate worn sticks. Lower yours until drift appears, then raise it one notch. That is the largest single accuracy gain available to most controller players.
Deadzone, properly set
The deadzone is stick movement the game ignores before registering input. It exists so that a worn stick resting slightly off-centre does not cause constant drift.
Setting it correctly:
- Set deadzone to the minimum the game allows
- Put the controller down and watch the camera
- If it drifts, raise the deadzone one increment
- Repeat until drift stops
- Leave it there
Most healthy controllers end up substantially below the default, and the difference in fine control is immediately noticeable.

Response curves
Most games default to an exponential curve, which gives fine control near the centre and accelerates toward the edges.
Linear is worth trying. Many competitive controller players prefer it because the relationship between stick position and camera movement stays constant, which makes tracking more predictable.
The adjustment period is real, usually a few hours. Commit to it for a session rather than switching back after ten minutes.
Separate your sensitivities
Turning quickly and aiming precisely are different tasks and a single sensitivity value compromises both.
Set general look sensitivity high enough to turn and react. Set aim-down-sights sensitivity noticeably lower for fine adjustment.
Most competitive controller players run a substantial gap between the two. If your game exposes separate values, use them; if it exposes a single multiplier for aiming, lower it.
Aim assist, understood correctly
Aim assist generally slows your reticle near a target rather than pulling it onto one. That distinction matters enormously for how you should play.
It rewards having your crosshair already close to where a target will be. Players with good crosshair placement extract far more from it than players who rely on it to find targets.
So the highest-value practice for controller aiming is not stick control at all. It is keeping your reticle at head height and pre-aimed at likely angles, which is a positioning habit rather than a mechanical one.

Hardware notes
Stick tension and thumbstick height affect precision meaningfully. Taller sticks give finer control through greater travel; shorter ones turn faster.
