Minecraft Diamond Mining Guide
Diamonds concentrate at a specific depth and the branch spacing most people use wastes half their time.
The short answer
Diamonds generate most densely around Y level -59 in current Minecraft versions, with deepslate diamond ore appearing throughout the deepslate layer but peaking near the world floor. Branch mining with tunnels spaced three blocks apart exposes the maximum number of new blocks per block mined, since ore veins are large enough to be visible from that distance. Mining at the correct depth matters more than any other single factor.

Diamonds are a solved problem and most people are still doing it the slow way.
Two things determine your rate: the depth you mine at, and the spacing between tunnels. Everything else is detail.
Set your floor at Y -58
That puts your eye level in the densest band around minus 59. Getting this wrong by twenty blocks halves your rate for the same effort.
Depth first
Press F3 on Java to see your coordinates. On Bedrock, enable Show Coordinates in world settings.
The branch mining pattern
Dig a main corridor two blocks high at your chosen depth. From it, dig side tunnels one block wide, spaced three blocks apart.
That spacing is the part people get wrong. Tunnels adjacent to each other re-expose rock you have already seen. Two solid blocks between tunnels still reveals nearly every diamond vein, because veins are large enough to poke through.
The result is roughly double the diamonds per hour for the same digging.
Make the side tunnels long, thirty blocks or more, before starting the next. Turning around constantly costs more time than people account for.
Before you start: get Fortune III
This is the single biggest multiplier available and it must be done first, because you cannot remine a vein.
Fortune III on a diamond pickaxe turns a typical vein into several times the diamonds. A mining run without it leaves most of your diamonds in the ground permanently.

Practical kit
- Iron or diamond pickaxe with Fortune III and a spare
- Torches, generously — mob spawns in your own tunnels waste time
- Water bucket for lava, which is common at this depth
- Food and a bed for the trip back
- Shulker box or ender chest if you have progressed that far
Lava is the main hazard at minus 59. Mine with a block between you and anything you have not seen, and never dig straight down.

What is the best Y level for diamonds?
Around Y minus 59 is the densest layer in current versions, sitting just above the bedrock floor. Diamonds generate throughout the deepslate range but their frequency increases as you go deeper, so mining near the floor rather than in the middle of the deepslate meaningfully improves your rate. Setting your tunnel floor at minus 58 puts your eye level in the right band.
Why space branch tunnels three blocks apart?
Because diamond veins are large enough to be visible from that spacing, so leaving two blocks between tunnels still exposes essentially every vein while mining far fewer blocks. Tighter spacing wastes time re-exposing rock you can already see. This single change roughly doubles diamonds found per hour of mining.
Does Fortune actually matter much?
Enormously. Fortune III on a diamond pickaxe multiplies drops substantially, turning a typical vein into several times the diamonds. Anyone mining seriously should get Fortune III before doing a large mining run rather than after, because remining the same veins is not possible. It is the highest-value enchantment in the game for this purpose.
Is cave exploring better than branch mining?
It is faster per diamond found but considerably more dangerous and less predictable. Deep caves and the deepslate layer expose large surfaces without any mining at all, so a well-lit cave system can be very productive. Branch mining is slower but safe and reliable, which is why most players do both depending on their gear.
