Minecraft Nether and End Dimension Guide

Both dimensions punish the same mistake: arriving with the wrong preparation for what is actually dangerous there.

DODan OkaforCompetitive & Settings Editor· 3 min read·Published · Reviewed by Priya Shah

The short answer

The Nether requires fire resistance planning, gold armour pieces to avoid piglin aggression, and a secured return portal, while the End requires ender pearls, blocks for pillaring, and awareness that water does not function there. The most common fatal mistake in the Nether is losing the return portal rather than dying in combat. In the End, it is being knocked into the void by an enderman or the dragon rather than sustained damage.

Both dimensions kill new players in ways that have very little to do with combat.

In the Nether, people die because they cannot find their portal. In the End, they die because they got knocked into the void. Neither is a damage problem.

Write down your Nether portal coordinates

Before you take one step. The Nether is featureless enough that portals become genuinely unfindable, and a lost portal usually means a lost inventory.

The Nether: what actually matters

Nether preparation, ranked

Water does not work in the Nether. It evaporates instantly. That single fact invalidates most of your instincts around lava, fire and falls, and fire resistance potions are the replacement.

On piglins: one gold item is enough to keep them neutral. Gold boots with otherwise decent armour is the standard arrangement, since gold armour itself is weak. They will still turn hostile if you open a chest or mine gold in front of them.

Build your portal marker tall and from something that contrasts. Cobblestone against netherrack is visible from a long way off.

The End: preparation is different

Getting there requires eyes of ender, made from blaze powder and ender pearls, which means a Nether trip first for blaze rods.

Throw eyes to locate the stronghold, then follow them down. They break occasionally, so bring more than you think you need, around fifteen is comfortable.

Fighting the dragon

The fight is straightforward once you understand one thing: the crystals heal the dragon.

  1. Destroy every end crystal first. Shoot the caged ones with a bow. Pillar up to the open ones and break them by hand or with a snowball.
  2. Only then engage the dragon. Fighting before the crystals are gone means fighting something being continuously healed.
  3. Watch for perching. The dragon lands periodically on the central pillar, which is when you deal real melee damage.
  4. Carry blocks and never fight near the edge. Being knocked into the void is the most common death here.

Endermen are the other hazard and they are provoked by looking at them. Wearing a carved pumpkin prevents that entirely, at the cost of restricted vision. Many players consider that trade worthwhile for this fight specifically.

The combat guide covers attack timing and shield use, both of which matter here more than in normal survival.

What works

    What doesn't

      Key takeaways

        Frequently asked questions

Why do I keep losing my Nether portal?

Because the Nether is featureless enough that landmarks blur together, and portals are easy to walk away from without noting coordinates. Write down the coordinates the moment you arrive, before exploring at all. Building a distinctive tall marker from a material that stands out, such as cobblestone in a netherrack landscape, makes it findable from a distance.

Do I need full gold armour for piglins?

No, a single piece is enough to prevent them turning hostile, which is a useful detail since gold armour is weak. Wearing gold boots with otherwise good armour gives you the protection without the drawback. Opening a chest or mining gold in front of them still angers them regardless of what you wear.

Why does water not work in the Nether?

It evaporates instantly by design, which removes the usual solutions for lava, fall damage and fire. This is the single most important behavioural difference and it invalidates a lot of instinctive habits. Fire resistance potions replace water as the answer to lava, and they should be considered mandatory rather than optional.

What is the safest way to fight the ender dragon?

Destroy every end crystal first, using a bow for the caged ones and blocks to reach the open ones, because the dragon heals from any crystal left standing. Only then engage. Most failed attempts are people fighting a dragon that is being continuously healed, which turns a manageable fight into an unwinnable one.
