Factory settings are bright and oversaturated because that sells monitors in shops. Fifteen minutes fixes it.

Monitors ship with brightness and saturation set high for retail display conditions, which produces crushed shadow detail and inaccurate colour in normal room lighting. Adjusting brightness to suit your actual environment and selecting a standard colour profile resolves most of the problem without specialist equipment. In games specifically, calibrating the in-game gamma or brightness slider correctly reveals detail in dark areas that competitive players otherwise miss.

Fifteen minutes of adjustment produces a noticeably better and more comfortable picture, and in competitive games it reveals things you currently cannot see.
Turn the brightness down
Factory brightness is set for retail lighting. In a normal room it is uncomfortable and crushes shadow detail. This is the single largest improvement available.
Step 1: Fix brightness for your actual room
Reduce brightness substantially from the default and judge it against your actual lighting conditions.
The test: a white page should look like paper, not like a light source. If looking at a bright scene is uncomfortable, brightness is too high.
Contrast generally wants to stay near its default. Raising it clips highlight detail, which is a common mistake when people try to compensate for reduced brightness.
Step 2: Choose a sane colour profile and disable enhancements
Find the picture mode setting and avoid anything called vivid, dynamic or cinema. These oversaturate and crush detail at both ends of the range.
Standard, custom or game mode are the sensible options. Game mode also reduces processing latency, which is worth having.
Then disable the enhancement features: dynamic contrast, black equaliser at extreme settings, and any motion processing. Each modifies the image in ways that cost more than they give.
Black equaliser deserves a note. At moderate settings it genuinely helps see into shadows in competitive games. At maximum it flattens the image into grey mush and makes things harder to distinguish, not easier.
Step 3: Calibrate the in-game gamma properly
Nearly every game includes a calibration screen with an instruction such as adjusting until a symbol is barely visible.
Most people glance at it and move on. Doing it properly makes a genuine difference, because a gamma set too dark means enemies in shadowed areas are invisible to you and visible to a correctly calibrated opponent.
Follow the instruction precisely. Barely visible means barely visible, not invisible and not clearly visible.
Do this per game, since implementations differ and a setting that works in one title will not transfer.
HDR, briefly
If your monitor supports HDR properly, calibrate it separately using the operating system's HDR calibration tool. HDR and standard settings are independent.
Many monitors advertise HDR support while lacking the brightness and contrast to deliver it meaningfully. On those, enabling it produces a washed out picture and turning it off is the better choice.
