Best NVIDIA Control Panel Settings for Gaming
Most of the control panel should be left alone. Four settings are worth changing and one of them is genuinely important.

Most NVIDIA Control Panel settings should remain at their defaults, with the exceptions being Shader Cache Size set to unlimited, Low Latency Mode configured according to whether variable refresh rate is in use, and Power Management Mode set to prefer maximum performance on desktops. Setting shader cache to unlimited prevents recurring shader compilation stutter and is the single most impactful change. Global overrides of texture filtering and antialiasing generally reduce quality without meaningful performance gain.

The NVIDIA Control Panel invites tinkering and most of it should be left alone. Global quality overrides in particular are a well-worn route to worse images for no benefit.
Four settings are worth your attention. One of them fixes a genuinely common problem.
Set Shader Cache Size to Unlimited
The default cap causes shader cache eviction and recompilation, producing recurring stutter in large games. Unlimited has fixed severe stuttering in several major titles. It costs disk space and nothing else.

Shader compilation stutter is one of the most common performance complaints in modern games, and the cache is central to it.
When the cache fills, older entries are evicted and must be recompiled when needed again. That produces stutter that returns in the same places repeatedly, which is the signature people describe as the game never smoothing out.
Setting it to unlimited allows the full set to persist. On a large modern title this can be tens of gigabytes, which is a reasonable trade for eliminating the problem.

The variable refresh rate configuration
This is the one people get wrong most often, and it is worth stating precisely.
For correct G-Sync behaviour:
- G-Sync enabled in the control panel for your display
- Vertical Sync set to On in the control panel, not off
- In-game V-Sync off
- Frame rate capped three to five below your refresh rate
That combination keeps the frame rate inside the variable refresh window without the latency penalty V-Sync normally introduces. Turning driver V-Sync off, which feels correct, actually allows frames to exceed the window and reintroduces tearing.
Low Latency Mode
With the above configured, Low Latency Mode adds little because the frame cap is already limiting the render queue. Ultra can occasionally reduce frame rate slightly.
Without a frame cap, On or Ultra genuinely helps by limiting queued frames.
So: cap the frame rate first, then set Low Latency Mode to On and leave it. The input lag guide covers where this sits among the other contributors.
Power management
On a desktop, prefer maximum performance avoids clock fluctuation that can cause micro-stutter. Idle power draw rises, which on a desktop is not important.
On a laptop, leave it on optimal power. The performance gain is minimal and the battery and thermal cost is substantial.
What to leave alone
Texture filtering quality, antialiasing modes, anisotropic filtering overrides, and ambient occlusion. Games handle all of these better than a global override, and forcing them causes visual bugs in some titles.
