No Display After Building or Upgrading a PC: The Diagnostic Order
Black screen on a new build or after a GPU swap. The five causes in order of likelihood, and how to test each in minutes.

A black screen on a new build is most often caused by the monitor being connected to the motherboard rather than the graphics card, an incompletely seated memory module or GPU, or a missing supplementary power connector. Checking these three before anything else resolves the large majority of cases. Motherboard diagnostic lights indicate which component the system is failing on and should be read before any disassembly.

Building a PC and getting nothing on the screen is a specific kind of unpleasant, because the failure gives you no information and the temptation is to start pulling things apart.
Do not start pulling things apart. There is an order, and the first three checks resolve most cases in under five minutes.
Check the cable first
The single most common cause of a black screen on a new build is the monitor plugged into the motherboard's display port rather than the graphics card. It happens to experienced builders too.
Likelihood order
Step 1: Check which port the monitor is in
Move the cable to the graphics card 30 seconds
If a graphics card is installed, the monitor must connect to the ports on the card, which sit lower on the rear of the case and are oriented horizontally. The motherboard ports higher up are only active when using integrated graphics. Move the cable and retry.
Step 2: Read the motherboard diagnostic lights
Most boards have four labelled LEDs: CPU, DRAM, VGA, BOOT. They light in sequence as each stage initialises, and the one that stays lit is where it stopped.
If BOOT is lit, your display is actually fine and you have a storage problem, which is a much better situation.
Step 3: Reseat memory and the graphics card

Power off and unplug. Open both retention clips, remove each module, then reinsert pressing firmly at both ends until the clips snap closed on their own. If you did not hear a click, it is not seated. This requires more force than most people apply the first time.
Also check slot placement. Most boards want two modules in the second and fourth slots counting from the processor, and the manual states this explicitly. Wrong slots can prevent boot entirely on some platforms.
Reseat the graphics card 3 minutes
Release the slot's retention clip, remove the card, and reinsert until it clicks. On heavy cards the far end can sag out of the slot during case movement, which is a common cause of a system that worked and then did not.
Step 4: Verify every power connector
Two are missed most often:
- Supplementary GPU power. Cards need one or more connectors from the power supply directly. Some need more than one, and some need every one populated rather than a daisy chain.
- CPU power. The connector at the top left of the board, separate from the large main connector. Systems boot fans and lights without it and display nothing.
Also confirm you are using cables that came with your specific power supply. Modular cables are not interchangeable between models and using the wrong ones can damage components.
If all of that fails
Strip to the minimum: motherboard, processor, one memory module, power supply. No graphics card if the processor has integrated graphics, no storage, nothing else. If it posts, add components back one at a time.
This is slow and it works. Take it out of the case onto the box if you suspect a case standoff is shorting the board, which is a real and hard-to-spot cause.

The fans spin, so the PC is working, right?
Not necessarily. Fans spin as soon as the power supply delivers power, which happens before the system has successfully initialised anything. Spinning fans confirm the power supply and the power button work, and nothing else. A system that fails at memory initialisation looks identical to a working one from the outside.
What do the motherboard lights mean?
Most modern boards have four small labelled LEDs for CPU, DRAM, VGA and BOOT, which light in sequence as each stage passes. The one that stays lit is where the system stopped. This is the most useful diagnostic tool on the board and a great many people do not know it is there.
How hard should I push memory in?
Harder than feels comfortable. Memory modules need enough force that the retention clips snap closed on their own, and partially seated memory is the most common cause of a no-display new build. Press each end of the module firmly until both clips click. If you did not hear a click, it is not seated.
Could the graphics card be faulty?
Possibly, but it is far down the probability list and should be tested rather than assumed. If the system has integrated graphics, remove the card and connect to the motherboard port. If it boots, the problem is the card, its slot or its power. If it does not, the card was never the issue.
