The used market is the best value in gaming. Here's what to buy, what to avoid, and the tests to run inside the return window.

The used market is where the value in gaming hardware actually is, and the risk is far more manageable than its reputation suggests — provided you know which categories are safe and how to test within the return window.
Never buy a used power supply
It degrades internally in ways you cannot inspect, it is the one component that can damage everything else when it fails, and the saving is small. This is the single firm rule on this page.

Look at the PCIe connector for damage, check the fan blades spin freely by hand, and look for obvious signs of a poor repair — flux residue, mismatched screws, damaged shroud clips.
Run a sustained load for thirty minutes minimum 30 min
Not five. Thermal problems take time to appear and a short test passes cards that fail at twenty minutes. Use a demanding game or a proper stress test.
Watch for artefacts during
Flickering textures, coloured dots, geometry stretching to the corners. Any of these means failing memory and the card should go back immediately.
Log clock and temperature during
A card that drops well below its rated clock while hot has a cooling problem, which may be repairable with a repaste but should affect what you pay.
Listen to the fans across the whole session during
Bearing noise often only appears at sustained higher speeds. A five-minute test at idle fan speed tells you nothing.
On mining cards
The concern is largely overstated. A card run at a steady moderate load in a temperature-controlled room is often in better condition than one thermally cycled hard through years of gaming — heat cycling stresses solder joints more than constant heat does.
What genuinely matters is the fans, which do wear with hours, and whether it has been repasted. Both are checkable.
Used monitors
Two checks, both quick, both things that cannot be fixed afterwards:
Dead and stuck pixels. Display full-screen solid colours — white, black, red, green, blue — and look carefully. Two minutes.
Backlight bleed. All black, in a dark room. Some is normal on most panel types; heavy patches in the corners are not.
Used complete systems
Sometimes excellent value, sometimes mismatched parts sold as a system.
Check: the power supply brand and age (this is where corners get cut), whether the RAM is a matched kit, whether the GPU is balanced against the CPU, and whether it is a prebuilt with proprietary parts that will limit future upgrades.
