Roblox Error Code 901 on Xbox: Account and Privacy Settings
901 and its companion 103 are Xbox privacy problems rather than Roblox faults. The setting that fixes them is not in Roblox.
The short answer
Roblox error code 901 on Xbox is caused by Xbox privacy settings restricting the account rather than by a fault in Roblox itself. The relevant settings control whether the account may join multiplayer games and communicate outside the Xbox network, and they are found in Xbox account privacy settings on the console or web. Child accounts have restrictive defaults that produce this error until an adult adjusts them.

Error 901 is one of the most confusing Roblox errors because the message comes from Roblox and the cause is entirely somewhere else.
Roblox on Xbox operates inside the console's account permissions. When one of those permissions says no, Roblox gets a refusal with no explanation attached, and reports a number.
The fix is not in Roblox
Every setting that resolves 901 lives in Xbox account privacy settings. Nothing inside the Roblox app will change it.
The settings that matter
Step 1: Open Xbox privacy settings
Reach the privacy settings 2 minutes
On the console, press the Xbox button, go to Profile and system, then Settings, then Account, then Privacy and online safety, then Xbox privacy. Choose View details and customise. Alternatively, sign in to the Microsoft account website and reach the same settings there, which is easier for a parent managing a child account remotely.
For a child account, these must be changed by an adult on the family account. The child cannot change them, by design.
Step 2: Allow joining multiplayer games
Under the game and communication section, find the setting controlling whether the account may join multiplayer games, and set it to allow.
This one setting resolves the majority of 901 reports on its own. It is set restrictively by default on child accounts and is frequently the only thing wrong.
Step 3: Allow communication outside the Xbox network
Roblox chat does not run through the Xbox network, so it requires the separate permission for communicating outside Xbox Live.
Set this to allow. If you want to restrict who your child can talk to, the more effective control is Roblox's own chat settings, which distinguish between friends and everyone. Blocking at the Xbox level blocks Roblox wholesale rather than restricting it usefully.
The parental controls guide covers layering these properly so protections stay in place while the game still functions.
If it persists
- Sign out of the Xbox account entirely and back in. Permission changes do not always apply to a running session.
- Restart the console with a full power cycle, holding power for ten seconds.
- Sign out of Roblox and back in, since it caches account state.
- Check the Roblox account date of birth, because Roblox applies its own age-based restrictions independently of Xbox.
That last point catches families out. An account created with an incorrect date of birth carries restrictions that no Xbox setting will lift.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Roblox show an error for an Xbox setting?
Because Roblox on Xbox operates within the console's account permissions, and when a permission is denied Roblox receives a refusal it can only report as a generic code. It cannot explain which Xbox setting is responsible. This is why the error is so confusing: the message comes from Roblox but the cause and the fix are entirely on the Xbox side.
What is the difference between 901 and 103?
They are closely related and both stem from Xbox account permissions. 103 typically appears when the account cannot create or access a Roblox account due to age settings, while 901 usually relates to multiplayer and communication permissions. In practice the same set of Xbox privacy settings resolves both, so check all of them.
My child gets this constantly. What should I change?
Child accounts on Xbox default to restrictive privacy settings that block the permissions Roblox needs. An adult on the family account can adjust them from the Xbox privacy settings, either on the console or through the Microsoft account website. Adjust the specific permissions rather than removing child account status, which would remove other protections.
Do I need to change anything in Roblox itself?
Usually not for this error. Roblox has its own privacy and chat settings, which are worth reviewing separately for a child account, but they do not cause 901. If the Xbox permissions are correct and the error persists, then a full sign-out and back in on both the Xbox account and Roblox is the next step.
