Camera settings decide more than mechanics at low ranks. Here's a sane starting configuration and what to practise.

The short answer

Camera settings have a larger effect on Rocket League improvement than mechanical practice at lower ranks, because a camera that shows too little makes good positioning impossible regardless of car control. A wide field of view, a moderately high camera distance and ball camera used most of the time is the standard configuration. Beyond that, rotation and positioning raise rank faster than aerial mechanics.

Rocket League improvement advice is dominated by mechanics — aerials, flicks, air dribbles. At low and mid ranks, almost none of that is what is losing you games.

Camera before mechanics

A camera that shows too little makes good positioning impossible regardless of how well you control the car. It is the setting that limits everything else, and a lot of players are fighting their camera without realising it.

A sane camera configuration

Set it once and give it two weeks. Changing camera settings weekly is the same problem as changing sensitivity weekly in a shooter — muscle memory never consolidates.

Ball camera, mostly

Ball camera keeps the ball framed, which is what you need for positioning and for challenging.

Switch to car camera when driving for boost, recovering after a hit, or lining up a long approach. Learning when to toggle is more valuable than committing permanently to either.

What actually raises rank

Return on effort at ranks below the top tiers

The top three rows are knowledge, not mechanics. They can be learned in an afternoon and applied immediately, and they win more games than a month of aerial practice.

Double committing — two teammates challenging the same ball — is the single most common cause of conceded goals at mid ranks. Watching your own replays for it is uncomfortable and effective.

Practising properly

Ten minutes of free play on one specific thing 10 min

One touch, one recovery type. Not a general knockabout.

Then play matches and try to use it ongoing

Mechanics you cannot apply under pressure are not mechanics yet. The transfer is the point.

Watch one of your own replays a week 15 min

From your teammate's perspective if possible. You will see the double commits and the missing rotations immediately, and you will not believe how often they happen.

Fix one habit at a time ongoing

This week: do not challenge when your teammate already has. Next week something else.

        What camera settings should I use?

        A wide field of view near the maximum, camera distance around 260 to 280, height around 100 to 110, angle around minus four, stiffness around half, and swivel speed comfortable for you. These are close to what most high-level players use, and the reason is simple: seeing more of the pitch matters more than seeing your car clearly. Set it once and give it two weeks.

        Should I always use ball camera?

        Most of the time, but not always. Ball camera keeps the ball framed which is what you need for positioning and challenges, but switching to car camera is correct when driving for boost, recovering after a hit, or lining up a long approach.         Is controller or keyboard better?

        Controller for the overwhelming majority, because analogue steering and air roll are genuinely important and binary keyboard input approximates them poorly. A small number of very good players use keyboard, which proves it is possible rather than advisable. If you are choosing, choose a controller.

        How do I practise effectively?

        Short focused sessions on one thing, then play. Free play for ten minutes working on a specific touch, then ranked games. Long training packs without applying anything in matches builds mechanics you cannot use under pressure, which is why people with good free-play control still lose games.
