Why eDPI exists at all

Two players argue about sensitivity. One says they play on 1.2, the other on 0.35. Neither number means anything without the DPI attached, because a 400 DPI mouse at 1.2 and a 1600 DPI mouse at 0.3 produce the exact same aim.

Multiply the two together and you get eDPI, a single number that describes the actual result. It is the figure every pro settings database publishes, and the only sensible way to compare two setups within the same game.

eDPI has one important limitation

It is not comparable across games. VALORANT’s sensitivity scale is roughly three times coarser than Counter-Strike’s, so an eDPI of 280 in VALORANT and 280 in CS2 are nothing alike. If you want to move a sensitivity between titles, use cm/360 and our sensitivity converter instead — that measurement is game-agnostic because it describes physical distance.

Picking a DPI in the first place

Almost any DPI between 400 and 1600 is fine on a modern sensor. The old advice to use 400 dates from an era when higher settings triggered sensor interpolation, and that has not been true on decent hardware for years.

Two things do still matter. Very low DPI on a 1440p or 4K monitor makes the desktop cursor feel like it is skipping pixels. And if your mouse has a native step it is tuned around — usually 800 or 1600 — sitting on it rather than an interpolated value between steps is marginally cleaner. Set 800 and stop thinking about it.

Before you trust any of these numbers

Turn off Enhance Pointer Precision in Windows mouse settings. It is acceleration, it is on by default, and it means your sensitivity changes depending on how fast you flick — which makes consistent aim impossible to build and makes eDPI a fiction.

What is eDPI?+

Effective DPI — your mouse DPI multiplied by your in-game sensitivity. It exists because 800 DPI at 0.4 sensitivity and 400 DPI at 0.8 produce identical aim, so comparing either number alone is meaningless. eDPI collapses both into one figure you can compare with anyone playing the same game.

What is a good eDPI?+

It depends entirely on the game, because each one scales sensitivity differently. In VALORANT most professionals sit between 200 and 320. In CS2 the equivalent band is roughly 700 to 1000. Comparing eDPI across different games does not work — use cm/360 for that.

Is lower eDPI better for aim?+

Lower generally helps precision at range because the same hand movement covers fewer degrees, so small errors matter less. But go too low and you cannot turn or react to someone behind you without lifting the mouse twice. The best eDPI is the lowest one where you can still comfortably turn 180 degrees in a single motion.

Does eDPI account for mouse acceleration?+

No, and this matters. If you have Windows pointer acceleration or in-game acceleration enabled, your effective sensitivity changes with how fast you move, and eDPI stops describing your aim accurately. Turn off Enhance Pointer Precision in Windows and disable any in-game acceleration before you take these numbers seriously.
