Buying a VR Headset: What Matters and What Is Marketing

Comfort, tracking and library size decide whether a headset gets used. Resolution figures decide almost nothing.

A standalone headset removes the setup friction that causes most VR purchases to gather dust, while a PC-tethered headset offers higher fidelity at the cost of that friction. Trying one before buying is worth more than any specification comparison.

The most useful VR statistic is not resolution or field of view. It is how many hours the headset gets used in the third month after purchase, and for a lot of people that number is close to zero.

Everything worth optimising for is about avoiding that outcome.

Friction is the enemy

A headset you can pick up and be inside a game with in thirty seconds gets used. One that needs a PC booted, software launched and a cable managed gets used on weekends, then not at all.

Comfort is the specification

Weight matters less than where the weight sits. A heavier headset with a rear counterweight and a rigid halo strap is more comfortable over an hour than a lighter one with a soft strap that pulls everything onto your cheekbones.

Points to check:

  • Strap type. Rigid halo straps distribute better than elastic ones. Many headsets ship with the cheaper option and sell the better one separately.
  • Facial interface. The foam or fabric against your face. Replaceable on most headsets and worth replacing.
  • Glasses compatibility. Some headsets accommodate glasses well, some poorly. If you wear them, this is decisive.
  • Interpupillary distance adjustment. Physical adjustment, not software. Without it, clarity depends on your face matching the default.

Standalone versus PC-tethered

Standalone: self-contained, no PC required, works anywhere, up and running in under a minute. The compromise is graphical fidelity roughly comparable to a mobile device, and battery life of a couple of hours.

PC-tethered: substantially higher fidelity, access to simulation and modded content, no battery limit. The compromise is a cable, a capable PC, and a launch sequence with several steps that can each go wrong.

Most current standalone headsets also connect to a PC over cable or wirelessly, which makes them the lower-risk purchase: you get the low-friction default with the option of the higher-fidelity path.

Before buying

  1. Name three games you want to play. Check each is on the platform you are considering. VR libraries are less unified than flat-screen ones.
  2. Try one if at all possible. Comfort and motion sensitivity are individual, and no review substitutes for twenty minutes wearing it.
  3. Budget for a strap and facial interface. Frequently a meaningful improvement over the included parts.
  4. Measure your space, including height. Ceiling fixtures are a common and expensive discovery.

        Standalone for almost everyone, because the friction of setting up a tethered headset is the main reason VR purchases stop being used. PC VR delivers higher fidelity and a deeper simulation library, and it is the right choice if you have the hardware and specific games in mind. Most standalone headsets can also connect to a PC, which makes them the safer default.

        Does resolution matter as much as reviews suggest?

        Less than comfort does. Beyond a certain point, additional resolution is a refinement rather than a transformation, and a sharper headset you find uncomfortable after twenty minutes gets used less than a slightly softer one you can wear for two hours. Lens quality and clarity across the field matter more than pixel counts.

        Will I get motion sick?

        Some people do, particularly with games that use artificial locomotion rather than teleportation. It usually reduces with exposure over a few weeks of short sessions. Starting with stationary or teleport-based experiences and increasing session length gradually is the approach that works for most people who initially struggled.

        How much space do I need?

        Less than expected for seated and standing experiences, which is most of the library. Roomscale games want a clear area of roughly two by two metres. The more common constraint is ceiling height and light fittings, which people discover the hard way. Clear the space above you as well as around you.
