Windows Gaming Settings — The Ones That Matter and the Myths
Most Windows optimisation guides are folklore. These are the settings with measurable effects, and the ones that do nothing.

Disabling Memory Integrity typically recovers several per cent of performance on affected systems, and switching from Balanced to High Performance matters most on laptops. Windows optimisation guides are mostly folklore — long lists of services to disable, registry keys to change, and tools to install, almost none of which produce anything measurable.
A small number of settings genuinely matter. Here they are, and here is what to ignore.
Do not run optimiser scripts
Service-disabling scripts and registry cleaners produce no measurable gaming benefit and frequently break things in ways that surface weeks later as inexplicable faults you will never connect to the script. Everything worth changing is in the normal Windows interface and is reversible.
Step 1: Power plan
The biggest single Windows setting, and it matters most on laptops.
On Balanced, Windows keeps CPU clocks lower and ramps them more slowly. In games that are sensitive to single-thread performance — which is most of them — that costs real frames.

Control Panel, Power Options. On some laptops the manufacturer provides its own performance mode, which is usually better tuned than the generic Windows one.

Most laptops cap performance substantially on battery regardless of the plan selected. There is no setting that overrides this on many machines.
Step 2: Memory Integrity and VBS
This is a genuine trade-off rather than free performance, which is why it deserves an actual decision.
Virtualisation-based security and Memory Integrity are real protections. They also cost measurable performance on many systems — several per cent is common, and occasionally more.
If the machine is used only for gaming, disabling them is a defensible choice.
If it handles anything sensitive — work, banking, anything you would mind losing — keep them on.
Check the current state in System Information, where VBS status is reported directly. Many systems have it enabled without the owner knowing.
Step 3: Turn off the interference
Game Bar is worth disabling entirely rather than just closing. It hooks into games and its overlay costs frames.
Fullscreen Optimizations is a per-game test. Older titles that expect true exclusive fullscreen often behave better with it disabled; modern ones usually do not care.
Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling genuinely differs between systems. Test it both ways in a game you play — this is one of the few settings where the right answer is not universal.

The gains are small enough that you will not measure them reliably, but there is no reason to turn it off. Ignore anyone who insists it must be disabled.
Should I disable Memory Integrity?
It is a genuine performance versus security trade-off, unlike most items in optimisation guides. Memory Integrity is a real security feature and it does cost measurable performance, often several per cent, on affected systems. If the machine is used only for gaming the trade may be worth it; if it handles anything sensitive, keep it on. Make the decision knowingly rather than following a script.
Do registry cleaners and optimiser tools work?
No. There is no measurable gaming benefit from registry cleaning, and service-disabling scripts frequently break things in ways that surface weeks later as inexplicable faults. The performance available from Windows configuration comes from a handful of specific settings, all of which are free and reversible in the standard interface.
What is Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling?
It moves some scheduling work from the CPU to the GPU's own scheduler. The effect varies by system and is usually small, occasionally slightly negative, and it is required for some frame generation implementations. Test it both ways in a game you play rather than assuming — this is one of the few settings where the correct answer genuinely differs between machines.
Does disabling Fullscreen Optimizations help?
In some older games, yes, and it is worth testing per game rather than applying globally. It changes how Windows composites the game window, and for titles that expect true exclusive fullscreen it can reduce latency and stutter. In modern titles it usually makes no difference or is slightly worse, since the optimisation exists to make borderless windowed behave more like exclusive fullscreen.
