Mobile Game Graphics Settings Explained
Frame rate cap and resolution scale do most of the damage. The preset slider does less than you think.
The short answer
On mobile, frame rate target and resolution scale affect performance and heat far more than the graphics quality preset, because both directly multiply the work done per second. Lowering the frame rate cap from 120 to 60 typically produces a larger and more sustainable improvement than dropping the preset one level. Shadows and post-processing effects are the individual settings with the highest cost relative to their visual benefit.

Mobile graphics menus present a preset slider and a handful of individual options, and most people move the preset and stop there.
The preset is not where the cost is. Two other settings do most of the work.
The two that matter
Frame rate target and resolution scale. Both multiply the work done per second, which is why they dominate everything in the quality preset.
Settings ranked by cost
Texture quality is the outlier and the one worth keeping high. It costs memory rather than processing, so on a device with enough RAM it is close to free while being one of the more visible settings.
The frame rate question
High frame rate modes on phones are effectively a burst setting rather than a sustainable one.
A phone has no active cooling. Running at a hundred and twenty frames per second generates heat faster than the chassis can dissipate it, so performance declines within minutes and settles somewhere unpredictable.
A stable sixty for an hour is a better experience than a hundred and twenty for eight minutes followed by a wobbling forty. Consistency matters more than peak in every game, and especially in competitive ones where you build timing around a frame rate.

Resolution scale, the underused one
Many mobile games render at full screen resolution by default and offer a scale setting that few people touch.
Dropping it modestly is frequently invisible on a screen held at arm's length, while reducing the work done per frame across the board. On a high pixel density display the effect is particularly hard to see.
This is the highest-value adjustment available in most games and the least used.
A sensible starting configuration
- Frame rate: 60, capped
- Resolution scale: slightly below maximum
- Shadows: low or off
- Post-processing: off
- Anti-aliasing: off, given high pixel density
- Textures: high, if the device has the memory
That configuration produces a stable, cool, long-lasting session on most mid-range hardware and looks close to identical to the maximum preset on a phone screen.
