Movement Technique in Competitive Shooters
Two movement habits separate players more than aim does, and neither requires mechanical talent to learn.

The two highest-value movement skills in competitive shooters are counter-strafing, which stops your character instantly so shots are accurate, and correct peeking technique, which controls how much of you is exposed and for how long. Both are learnable through deliberate repetition rather than requiring reaction speed. Movement that is predictable to opponents is a larger weakness than slow movement, since predictability allows pre-aiming.

Counter-strafing is the highest-value mechanic
Tapping the opposite direction key cancels momentum instantly. In games where accuracy depends on standing still, this is the difference between landing and missing.
Counter-strafing
In most tactical shooters, your accuracy is poor while moving and good while stationary. Releasing a movement key does not stop you immediately; your character decelerates over a short period during which shots still miss.
Tapping the opposite key cancels that momentum almost instantly.
Moving left with A, tap D briefly, and you stop dead. Fire during that stationary moment.
The rhythm becomes: strafe, tap opposite, fire, strafe again. It takes a few hours to become automatic and it changes the outcome of most duels once it does.
Peeking
The universal principle: your crosshair should already be at head height on the angle before you expose yourself. Peeking and then aiming is two actions where there should be one.
Wide peeking works because of how information travels. Moving wide means you see the opponent's position before they see yours, if you commit to the movement rather than edging out.
Predictability is the bigger weakness
Slow movement loses duels. Predictable movement loses rounds.
If you take the same route at the same timing every round, opponents pre-aim it. Your position becomes known before you arrive, and no amount of mechanical skill compensates for walking into a pre-aimed crosshair.
Vary your timing. Occasionally take a route that makes no sense. Being unpredictable is frequently more valuable than being fast, and it costs nothing mechanically.
What to actually practise
- Counter-strafing until it is automatic. In a practice range, not in ranked. A few hours total.

- Varying your timing deliberately for a session until it stops feeling forced.
Movement that does not transfer
Some games have elaborate movement systems, and skill in them does not necessarily transfer to tactical shooters where the meta is stillness and precision.
