I have built machines for fifteen years and I still recommend prebuilts to some people. The dogma on this question is unhelpful in both directions.
What is true is that the argument has changed. It used to be about price. It is now about which components the builder decided you would not notice.
The spec sheet is the marketing
A prebuilt lists the CPU and GPU because those are what people compare. The power supply, motherboard and cooling are where the price was found.
Where prebuilt savings come from
The RAM one deserves emphasis. A single stick runs in single channel and costs real frames in CPU-bound games. It is a common cost saving and it is one of the most damaging.
Where prebuilts genuinely win
One warranty. If something fails, you return a machine. You do not spend an evening determining whether it is the RAM or the board, then argue with two manufacturers.
Availability during shortages. Builders get GPU allocation before retail does. During a supply crunch a prebuilt can be the only way to get a specific card at a sane price.
Time. Building, installing an OS and drivers, and troubleshooting a machine that does not post first time is a weekend for a first-timer. That weekend has a value.

- Look at the front panel. Solid glass with no side intake means heat.

- Look for real thermal testing in reviews, not spec recitals.
A prebuilt that passes all six is a good machine and probably fairly priced. Most do not publish enough to pass point one, which is informative in itself.
