Running Roblox on a School or Work Laptop

The short answer
Roblox on low-specification laptops is limited by single-threaded processor performance and memory rather than by graphics, so lowering graphics quality helps less than closing background applications and reducing the render distance. Roblox has a reputation as a lightweight game, which is why it surprises people when it runs badly on a laptop that handles everything else without complaint.
The reason is what Roblox actually demands: single-threaded processor performance and memory. Office laptops are specified for neither.
Not a graphics problem
Roblox is CPU and memory bound on this class of hardware. That is why lowering graphics quality produces smaller gains than people expect, and why closing a browser produces larger ones.
What is actually limiting you
Step 1: Use the client, not the browser
Install the desktop client if permitted 5 minutes
The desktop client performs noticeably better than the browser version, particularly on constrained hardware, because it avoids the browser's own memory and processing overhead. If the device is managed and blocks installation, the browser is your only route and you should skip to step two.
Step 2: Close everything, especially browser tabs
On a 4GB machine this is the highest-impact action available.
Windows itself takes a substantial share. A browser with a handful of tabs can take most of what remains. Roblox then runs in whatever is left, which is why it stutters and freezes rather than simply running slowly.
Close the browser completely, not just the tabs. Check the system tray for background applications that start with Windows, most of which you did not choose.
Step 3: Lower graphics and reduce what is rendered
In Roblox, the graphics quality slider also governs render distance, which is why it helps more here than a pure quality setting would.
Set graphics to minimum 1 minute
Press Escape in any experience, open Settings, set Graphics Mode to Manual, and reduce Graphics Quality to the lowest level. This reduces both visual quality and how much of the world is drawn and simulated, which is the part that matters on this hardware.
Also consider reducing the game window size. Running windowed at a smaller size lowers the number of pixels the integrated graphics has to produce, which is a real gain when graphics is the constraint.
Step 4: Choose lighter experiences
This is the part no setting change substitutes for.
Roblox experiences vary enormously in demand. A simple obstacle course and a large open-world simulator with hundreds of active objects have almost nothing in common in terms of load.
Lighter, generally:
- Obstacle courses and platformers
- Small-map round-based games
- Simple social and roleplay experiences with few players
- Older experiences built before recent feature additions
Heavier, generally:
- Large open worlds with many simultaneous players
- Simulators with large numbers of active objects and effects
- Experiences with detailed lighting and dense terrain
- Anything with many players in one visible area

Thermal management
Laptops in this class throttle quickly. If performance is acceptable for ten minutes and then degrades, that is heat rather than a setting.
Elevate the rear of the laptop so air can reach the underside intake, keep it off soft surfaces, and clear the vents. This is worth several frames per second on a machine that is throttling, and it costs nothing.
